Business Department to Run Coffee Shop • The Greenville High School Business Department will now be operating The Ground Floor, a coffee shop located at GHS. The Ground Floor coffee shop will be operated by various Career and Technology classes. This venture will give GHS business students an opportunity to experience customer service, inventory management, product development, cash flows, and marketing research. The Ground Floor experience will allow students to gain real-world experience through the integration of business curriculum and hands-on practice. • Accounting classes will record daily receipts and manage account balances for the Ground Floor. Introduction to Business and Marketing classes will develop advertising campaigns and product promotions based on marketing research conducted at Greenville High. Entrepreneurship classes will prepare financial documents and develop a business plan for the coffee shop. Family and Consumer Science classes will bake and prepare the products each day. All classes will work at the coffee shop during lunch in rotating shifts and roles to maximize exposure to all areas of business operations. • The GHS Business department is excited about this interactive learning experience that will integrate multiple business activities and concepts, as well as actively engage students in the learning process.
K9-Unit visits Law Ed Class • Corporals Blair and Austin came to GHS for a presentation on the K9 officers’ line of work. The dog, also an officer, who came along with them, was named Nero. Nero showed the students how he sniffs out illegal substances and follows the orders of the officers. Officers Blair and Austin spoke about what it is like to train and serve alongside dogs like Nero.
Business Students Create Fliers • Ms. Sweeney’s Desk Publishing class has created brochures, fliers and our new magnet web page. The fliers and brochures are specific for the Career and Technology Department at GHS. Through this class, students learn marketing and advertising techniques used to create, format, and print professional publications.
Nick Theodore Visits Business Law Class • Former Lt. Governor of South Carolina and Greenville High Alumni, Nick Theodore visits Ms. Sweeney’s Business Law class on November 22, 2010. Mr. Theodore discussed how his memorable days at GHS helped shape his career in politics. He explained that he served on the executive and legislative branches of government and how he wrote several laws in South Carolina.
Nick Theodore Visits Business Law Class (continued) • Mr. Theodore also explained to the students the proper steps needed to turn a bill into a law. Mr. Theodore, with warmest thanks and gratitude, requested the students to keep in touch with him and if they have any suggestions regarding changing a law in South Carolina to let him know and he would assist. He left with Ms. Sweeney, legislative manuals and a better understanding of the branches of government for South Carolina.
GHS Holds Law Week • Greenville High School will host its first annual Law Week during the week of April 4. Planned activities include Panel Discussion held on Tuesday April 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Topics for discussion will include internet issues, student rights, family law matters, drugs and underage drinking plus a wild card session. Parents and community members are invited to attend these sessions. Attorneys taking part in • Area attorneys will speak to magnet law and social studies classes during the week. The keynote speaker for this week’s events will be Dr. Rodney Smolla, President of Furman University. Dr. Smolla will speak on Wednesday April 6 to students and guest. Dr. Smolla is considered to an authority on constitutional law.
