  1. Karymsky Teddy Echeverria & Drew Choos Department of Geology Colby College

  2. Basic Information • Located in Kamchatka • On the “Ring of Fire” • Stratovolcano • Crater of Volcano is 200m in diameter • Summit Elevation is 1486 meters • Named after Karyms

  3. Subduction zone volcano • Located where the Pacific plate, Bering block, and Okhotsk plate meet • Most active Volcano on Kamchatka’s eastern volcanic shore

  4. Eruptions First eruption in 1771 Eruptions have been vulcanianor volcanian-strombolian Eruptions result in pyroclastic flows and andesitic magmas Has been erupting continuously since 1996 The most recent activity occurred only weeks ago Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old Ash and gas plumes affect some local air travel Karymsky Lake is one of the world’s largest acid reservoirs

  5. Karymsky Lake

  6. Deposits • Type of volcanic deposits depends on eruption style • Deposits include blocky lava flows, pyroclastic flow deposits, blocks, bombs and ash • Deposits are primarily limited to the caldera

  7. Petrology • Karymsky primarily produces andesites, andesite-dacites, and dacites

  8. Hydrothermal Activity • Numerous hot springs and geysers are active along the fault lines between Karymsky and AkademiaNauk Caldera

  9. Monitoring • The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) was established in 1993 • The KVERT sends reports to a number of larger monitoring institutions as well as a number of major airlines. • Seismic, Satellite monitoring
