  3. Human Computer Interaction • Real-Time Gestural Control of Computer Music (Sound Synthesis). • Questions to be addressed: • How to use the computer as part of a real-time instrument? • How to play the computer? MUMT-620

  4. Human Computer Interaction • This seminar aims at presenting the ground notions regarding human-computer interaction (HCI) in complex,multi-parametric contexts such as computer music, and interactive live performance. MUMT-620

  5. Main Topics - 1 • Analysis of gestural communication in HHC, HCI, and Music. • Review of the existing literature in HCI and its application to the design and evaluation of new interfaces for musical expression. MUMT-620

  6. Main Topics - 2 • Possibilities regarding gestural acquisition: direct, indirect and physiological gestural acquisition. • Mapping strategies relating control variables to synthesis variables and their influence on instrument expressiveness. MUMT-620

  7. Teaching methods • Lectures (Powerpoint). Examples will be provided by means of videos and demos. • Readings to be discussed in the following class (mandatory!) • Student presentations based on selected key readings. MUMT-620

  8. Guidelines for Student Pres. • A summary of the article assigned to you containing: • A list of the main ideas • Strong and weak points • Comparison with similar works • A list of 3 questions to be discussed in class (to be distributed before class!) MUMT-620

  9. Individual Projects • Students will propose individual projects: • Based on the arduino board and basic sensors • Formal evaluation of existing controllers • Final project will be decided with instructor • Project demonstration and report due on week 13 MUMT-620

  10. Learning Outcomes • A thoroughunderstanding of the major trends in HCI and music. • A clear idea of the functioning of several available input devices. MUMT-620
