  1. NEURONAL GLIAL CULTURE FACILITY (NGF) Description NGF is a virtual core facility that does not occupy a physical space. It operates in the common cell culture facility and the coordinator’s lab with a budget below 50K. NGF is an integral part of the RCMI-CIAS. NGF personnel consist of a coordinator, Dr. P.A. Ferchmin, a research technician, Mrs. Brenda Cuadrado, and a visiting consultant. In April our consultant, Dr. Hermes Hsiao-mei Yeh from Dartmouth U. will come to interact with NGF personnel and users.

  2. The services of NGF include: primary neuronal cultures from pre and postnatal cortex or hippocampus; astrocyte from neonatal cerebral cortex; organotypic hippocampal slices and since last year, cell lines, stem cells and neurospheres. Upon request of the users immunostaining of cultures after experimental treatment will be done. Immunocytochemical methods are used to monitor the quality of our cultures.

  3. NGF Coordinator RCMI P.D. Dr. E. Rios Modus Operandi of NGFInitial steps, routine procedure, appeal User Intramural or extramural NGF research technician

  4. NGF facilitates the work of the users in several manners The NGF keeps supplies to start the cultures. Has written protocols to be used or discussed with the investigator. The NGF has IACUC protocols approved, therefore the user does not have to obtain the IACUC approval for the procedures used with live animals. However, in the case of cultures for which NGF uses animals the user must submit an approved IACUC protocol in which he justifies the number of cultures requested, proofs that the project is not a futile replication of published experiments, brief description of the working hypotheses and goals of the project. This requirement was implemented following the guidance of the EAC that clearly reflects the NIH guides.

  5. Tentative list of charge for services: The time includes (1) rat husbandry for timed-pregnant rats, (2) preparation for dissection that involves tool sterilization and medium preparation, (3) medium changes, (4) quality control and (5) house keeping directly related to cultures.

  6. The funds collected from the fee for service will be used to cover expenses related to maintenance of microscope, replacement of dissection tools, reagents, culture media and antibodies used to typify cultures.

  7. How to place an order: The first time you request a service from NGF discuss your requirements with the NGF coordinator. You must apply to IACUC using the short form. We will facilitate your work in whatever way possible, reasonable and according to regulations. For the routine orders we will kindly request that you submit this form by email tobcuadrado@uccaribe.edu Cc toferchmin@gmail.com We prepared forms to facilitate the requisition of services, the IACUC approval and the fee for service. The forms are shown below.
