  3. Hokie Information Virginia Tech's sports teams are known as the "Hokies". The word "hokie" came from the "Old Hokie" spirit yell created in 1896 by O.M. Stull for a contest to find a new school spirit yell when the college's name was changed. "Hokie" (in its various forms) has been around at least since 1842. “Hokie” was a word that people would say to express great feeling, approval, excitement, and surprise. “Hokie” then, synonymous with words like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.’ The mascot is the Hokie Bird, a turkey-like creature. The teams were originally called the "Fighting Gobblers," and the turkey motif was kept even after the name change.
