Global Wind Generator Production Trajectory – Staggering Growth With 29% CAGR During 2009-2020

Emerging as a feasible alternative to fossil fuels, wind energy is being increasingly utilized, due to its economic viability compared to other renewable forms of energy and because it’s cleaner than conventional energy sources. This growth trajectory in the wind energy industry is being primarily led by the US, China, Germany and Spain, which together accounted for 66% of global cumulative installed wind generator capacity in 2009. These countries are riding on the growth wave of the wind energy industry. The industry witnessed a growth rate of 38% during 2008-09 in cumulative installed capacity and along with it; there was also a significant growth in components such as wind generators. Demand for wind generators in the booming wind markets - the US, Europe and China - continue to increase. The global wind generator production grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 29%, from 18,000 Megawatts (MW) in 2006 to 35,398MW in 2009. The wind generator production globally is expected to reach 67,403MW by 2020, at a CAGR of 6% during the period 2009 and 2020.

An Upcoming Trend in Wind Generator Market – Direct-Drive Generators

Utilization of direct-drive, grid connected generators in wind generation is expected to grow in the future. future trend . The elimination of gear boxes and power electronic converters will significantly increase system reliability. The overall system efficiency will increase because the losses in the gear box and power electronic converters are eliminated. The power loss in the gear box accounts for a fairly high proportion of the total wind turbine system loss, and thus reduces efficiency.

Additionally, gearbox reliability has been a major issue. And each time a gearbox is replaced, it is a major expense for wind turbine generators. But direct-drive generators eliminate this issue by removing the gearbox entirely. The direct-drive approach was successfully adopted long ago by Enercon and is being examined by other turbine manufacturers. Modular (transportable) and maintenance-friendly versions of these large generation systems will go a long

way in making the low-wind portion of the power curve much more productive. Though direct-drive generators have a number of advantages, it is difficult to comprehend in which direction the electric generators used in wind turbine is expected to move. geared generators have their distinctive advantages too. And therefore, it cannot be said with certainty whether the market for direct drive generators will grow more than geared generators or vice versa.

More Than 90% of Wind Generator Production is Concentrated in Europe and APAC

Most wind generator manufacturers are based in Europe, like ABB, Winergy, Ingeteam, Leroy Somer, The Switch, and many more. Germany dominates European wind generator production with approximately 6,600MW in 2009. With the growth in the wind energy market in Asia-Pacific (APAC) – mainly in China and India – the European wind generator producers initiated the expansion of their manufacturing base by establishing facilities in the APAC region. Additionally, several Chinese companies forayed into wind generator market, subsequently leading to increases in production. China leads the global wind generator production market with 12,831MW in 2009.

High Demand for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator

Permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMGs) are increasingly becoming popular as they eliminate the need for field windings. Previously, the

slide5

synchronous generators were at a disadvantage in economic terms due to high initial costs. Today, the permanent magnet synchronous generators with no gearbox (direct-drive) in the capacity range of 300-600 Kilowatts (kW) and above 750kW have an initial cost that is only slightly more than the cost of induction generators.

As PMGs allow direct connection to the wind generator without any intermediate gearbox, there is a subsequent increase in reliability, making it especially appropriate for offshore installations where access is limited by weather and sea conditions. Also, a survey of the maintenance reports clearly indicates that a major part of the maintenance work load for wind turbines is attributable to breakdowns and faults in gearboxes. As a result, PMGs are considered more efficient than the conventional synchronous generators. Currently, PMG of approximately 6MW are being manufactured.

Emerging Trend in Vertical Integration – increase in Outsourced Production of Wind Generator

Wind turbine manufacturers, depending on the supply scenario of wind components, make strategic decisions about whether or not to produce components in-house. Gamesa and Enercon, two of the leading wind turbine manufacturers, have historically produced all their wind generators in-house. At the same time, GE completely outsources its wind generator production. Companies prefer to manufacture wind turbine components within their business structure to avoid issues encountered while outsourcing, like quality control and design confidentiality.

According to Enercon, manufacturing components internally, has minimized the risk of shortage of components. The constant growth in the wind market forces wind turbine manufacturers to look for multiple component suppliers to continue smooth production. Several long-term agreements are currently being drawn up between turbine manufacturers and their suppliers.
