  2. What do you think? • New adventures may create opportunities for turning points. – Do you agree or disagree with this statement? • When did you ever go on an adventure? • Was it a turning point in your life? • What do you know about skydiving? • Sky surfing over San Diego, California

  3. Reading • What do you think is the writer’s purpose? • What are some descriptive words the writer uses? Were they effective? • How does Elaine Marshall communicate her passion for skydiving? What words help you understand how she feels? • How would you describe the voice?

  4. Reading • In the highlighted metaphor, what does the writer compare her body to? Does this help the reader? • What skydiving terms does the writer use? Does this give her voice credibility? Why? • Was her writing lively or lifeless? Explain.

  5. After • What adjective would you use to describe her voice? How can you sense her passion? Give examples. • What does she reveal about her personality? Likes and dislikes? • What subheadings would you use to divide the section into 3 or 4 parts? • How do you know when you have used voice and word choice effectively in your writing?

  6. Follow-Up • Choose a character: • Drill sergeant, racecar, shark, infant, butterfly, etc. • In your journals write a paragraph in the voice of your character. • Use appropriate word choice. Use the focus pages 50 – 51, for help. You will share these with the class for oral presentation marks.
