  2. Crusade • Crusade • Was war between Christians and the Muslims • The wars were over a land called the Holy Land • This land was Jerusalem and other places in Palestine

The First Crusades • The First Crusade was started when the Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II for knights to fight the Muslims Turks. • At the Council of Clermont in 1095 Pope Urban called Bishops and nobles to action. • Pope Urban called for a crusade to free the Holy Land because God said so. • First Crusade was a religious war.

  4. Reasons why to go • Religious • Repent for sins • Religious Zeal • Crusading spirit • Wealth and land • Escape problems at home • Adventure

  5. Pope Urban’s Motivations • Stop infighting amongst Christianity • Increase his power.

  8. Other Crusades • There were 8 other crusades after the first one. • There were not successful in at all • Happened over the next 200 years. • Muslims finally drove the Christians out in 1291

  9. Impact of the Crusades • Left a bitter hatred between the Muslims and the Christians. • Helped to create a money economy • Created trade routes to the Middle East • Incresed the power of the Monarchs • Increased the power of the Pope

  10. The Reconquista • Reconquista • Campaign to retake lands in Spain from the Muslims who took it. • Took the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella and 400 years to retake Spain.

  11. Inquisition • Inquisition • A church court set up to try people accused of heresy. • Jews and Muslims had to covert to Christianity. • If they didn’t they could be tried and killed. • This united the country but drove many of the skilled workers out of the country.
