Organizers: Jerry Hastings SSRL Patrick Krejcik SLAC Juhao Wu SLACHolger Schlarb DESY Measurement techniques for electron bunch length and arrival time Diagnostics for spontaneous undulator and XFEL radiation for the determination of the temporal profiles. Timing and synchronization of the electron beam, acceleration RF and ultra-fast lasers

Workshop focuses on technical aspects of monitor systems to characterize the longitudinal electron and photon pulse profiles especially after final compression: • typical time scales of operation is ~ 100-200 fs • good control of the accelerator requires resolutions of ~ 10-50 fs • and taking into account potential micro-bunch instabilities < 10 fs • beside the high precision the monitor has • a large dynamic range • is fully parasitical and non-destructive • allows a detailed recording of bunch to bunch parameters • ultra-fast processing time for feedback loops (<10ms LCLS, <1us XFEL) • suited for non-standard operation (rep. rate, charge, orbit, etc.) • insensitive to accelerator jitter • operation with high reliability, availability and a high degree of automation •  Very likely that different system with complementary abilities are required • Question: which monitor can be used and what is the best suited combination

Workshop structure • Limited number of talks: • Overview on the different techniques • Recent experimental result using the new techniques • Background information on the theory • Common understanding on the various subjects for all participants • Update on the state-of-art systems • Current limitations of a system and potential upgrades Sufficient time for discussion: • on the potentials of the different methods • to identify open items and question to be addressed • Exchange of technologies and successful developments • Distribute homework on requiredtheoretical or exp. investigations • Search on new techniques or for combinations of known methods • Make use of potentials given by SPPS, TTF2 or other facilities

Workshop structure • Timing and synchronization (Mo/Tu): • Beam stabilization, increase performance of monitors system • conventional RF systems • LLRF regulation • applicability of new synchronization methods Photon diagnostics (Tu/We): • simulations spont. + FEL • techniques on spectrum, pulse power and pulse length and coherence Electron diagnostics (Th): • electro-optical techniques • Coherent radiation diagnostics and T-cavity • Not obvious if photon or electron techniques have higher potentials • To certain extend both are required for cross-checks or to accomplish the experimental results

  6. XFEL Workshop Barbecue A sunset picnic has been planned in a sylvan setting just a short drive from SLAC in the Santa Cruz Mountain Foothills. A full BBQ dinner with refreshments will be provided at no cost to workshop participants and their companions through the generous support of Varian Corporation. Jeff Morgan, local engineer from Varian will be on hand if you’d like to thank him.
