  1. Welcome to the "Authentic Teaching for Today's Math and Science Educators." The College of Engineering and The Center for Educational and Community Renewal Sponsored by the National Science Foundation's  Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education Program

  2. Background • $1.5 million; 3 year education grant from the National Science Foundation • Only 24 national awards in 2001 - Only 5 states received 2 awards (OK, GA, SC, IL, & NY) - OU was the only university in the nation • to receive 2 awards!

  3. Goals • Short Term: • Enhance current science, math, engineering and technology education • Engage students in higher-level thinking using authentic learning activities • Meaningfully incorporate technology into authentic learning • Long Term: • Increase the number of secondary math and science teachers • Increase the number of students choosing careers in science engineering and technology • Increase the public’s science and math knowledge

  4. Dr. Joseph Bordogna, NSF Deputy Director, 2000

  5. Authentic Teaching & Learning Undergraduate & Graduate Students X Schools Students Motivated Students Faculty Outreach University What is the Authentic Teaching Alliance? • Questions & Issues • No connection btw students & • university students • Gap in the educational • continuum • What are the benefits of • bridging this gap? • How can the gap be bridged? • Questions & Issues • Lasting value? • Authentic learning? • Value = faculty effort & time? • Teacher education?

  6. Strategy: • Educate science, math, & engineering students, and science & math education students on authentic learning • Tap into their enthusiasm and knowledge regarding their field of study • Partner with secondary teacher who will mentor and guide them in developing professional educational practices • Together, as a team, they design, build, and implement inquiry-based, authentic learning activities • Incorporate these activities into lessons, demonstrations, laboratory exercises, individual and group projects, and field trips • Incorporate current technology into authentic learning activities • University faculty participate as scientific and technical resource providers Authentic Teaching & Learning Undergraduate & Graduate Students • Goals: • Create authentic learning in science and math for students • Mentor and nurture undergrad & grad students as teachers • Provide technical and scientific resources to teachers • Integrate all members of the educational community in learning & teaching Students Teachers University Faculty What is the Authentic Teaching Alliance?
