  2. New France • The French began to settle colonies in the 1600s • Samuel de Champlain • 11 voyages • Founded Quebec on the St. Lawrence River • Explored Vermont and NY

New France • Life in New France • Different from New Spain • Made money from fishing and fur trade • Traded with the natives • Trading posts set up by Champlain continued to flourish • Coureurs de bois traveled into N.A. • Some married native women and started families • In the late 1600s fur prices dropped • People began to farm • The king set colonist including women • Population grew to 5,000 in1672

New France • Exploring the Mississippi • Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, explored the Great Lakes region and established missions • Marquette and Louis Joliet, a fur trader, explored through Wis. To the Mississippi R. • Thought they had found the Northwest Passage • At the Arkansas R. realized they were going to the Gulf of Mexico • Returned home • LaSalle followed their route to the Gulf of Mexico and claimed all of the lands along the MS R. for France. • Named it Louisiana

New Netherland • Dutch claims based on Hudson’s exploration • Main settlement in Albany • Others settled in New Amsterdam • Mouth of the Hudson R. • 1653 had 800 people • The English were blocked from moving west (Most of New England is east of New York) • The English took New Netherlands and renamed it New York

The Impact on Native Americans • Native Americans and the French had a good relationship • French get furs • Native Americans get manufactured goods • iron pots • tools • Guns • Also a negative effect • Guns added to the disputes between the Huron and Iroquois • Introduction to European diseases • Loss of furbearing animals
