Terror Laws Law of Suspects • The Law of Suspects was passed on September 17, 1794 • This allowed anyone who criticized the revolution to get arrested without a trial. • It was a wide-ranging law and was easily abused. • All ex-nobles including women and children faced arrest, unless they could prove that they supported the revolution

  3. Terror laws continued.. Law of Prairal • Passed on June 10, 1794 • Allowed courts to convict people without (hearing) any evidence • Only verdicts were innocent or death by the guillotine • Created by the committee of public safety but was used by the Revolutionary Tribunals • “ No one knew how the Reign of terror could end, if someone merely criticized the government that person faced executions .” (Arnold, 66)

Revolutionary Tribunals What were they? • “ The revolutionary Tribunal in Paris was created on March 1793 on the proposal, ironically of Carrier who would later be sentenced to death by the tribunal he helped bring into being.” ( Hanson, reign of Terror) • The revolutionary tribunal was a counsel that tried prisoners who were suspected of being an enemy to the revolution. • The head was Robespierre, and the committees of General security, and public safety had to sign the list of prisoners before they were shown to the Revolutionary tribunals

Continued.. • The most famous was in Paris but others similar tribunals were located all over France. • They were created to get rid of all enemies of the people. • Enemies included people who… • Seek to destroy public liberty • Criticize the National Convention • Spread lies in order to disturb people • Deceive the people for their own purposes • Corrupt the public morals

Revolutionary Tribunals Which political group was targeted? • They targeted the Girondins, who were known for once favoring the constitutional monarchy • 29 were captured,21 were guillotined in Oct. 1793 • At first the courts were used for traitors but by the end it was men using/ abusing the power to kill political rivals
