  9. Goals • Improve student outcomes & retention • Free up classroom space • Reduce costs

  10. Model: Replacement • Replaces ½ of the class sessions with supervised, online activities in a scheduled computer lab • Assumes that certain learning activities can be better accomplished online than in a face-to-face class

  11. A typical week in MAT 013(Pilot sections) • Monday: 9am-11am: Students attend a traditional classroom learning how to solve systems of linear equations • Wednesday: 9am-11am: Students attend a structured computer lab to practice solving systems of linear equations using an online course management system

  12. Lab Component : Eduspace • Interactive E-book • Tutorials • Videos • Practice exercises • Graded quizzes

  13. Collaboration • Houghton Mifflin: Project Manager, Field Marketer, Sales Representative • Middlesex CC: Dean, IT person, several faculty members

  14. Collaboration Process • Needs Assessment consultation • Design Course Structure • Involve IT person for any network/server issues • Training • 2-semester Pilot: Fall ‘07-Spring ‘08

  15. The sample groups • 8 sections: Traditional (no technology) • 4 sections: Traditional (technology made available, but not required) • 3 sections: Pilot (2 hrs/week classroom, 2 hrs/wk lab)

  16. Results • Results for Fall/Spring will be calculated after Spring semester • Dependent Variables: % of A/B/C and class average on Departmental Final Exam
