  20. 11. Read the passage and answer the questions. • Alexander is famous for having treated women with respect. The clearest example of his regard for women took place when he defeated the Persian forces. The Persian King Darius III fled for his life. He departed in such a haste that the royal entourage, including his family (which he had brought to the front lines) was left behind. • After his great victory, Alexander was astounded when he saw the quarters that were left behind on the battlefield by the Persian King. • There were huge piles of gold and silver. Even daily implements were made of gold. There was a magnificent bath tub and luxurious beds. • And the Persian king’s family, his elderly mother, the queen, and his two daughters were there as well. • According to the custom of the times, Alexander could have done his worst to these women and no one would blink an eye. Naturally, the women were in the deepest depths of terror and despair. • But Alexander was an honorable person. He immediately had the message conveyed to the women that Darius had escaped with his life; that he, Alexander, would not harm them; and that they would continue to receive the same treatment and protection they had under their own king. • He made every effort to lighten their sense of anxiety and indignity at being taken prisoners. He gave them an allowance bigger than an allowance bigger than they had before. • The old queen mother was so grateful for Alexander’s kind treatment that she grew to love and respect him with all her heart. So much so that years later, which he passed away she died of sorrow. • When Persian king heard of the consideration that Alexander had shown to his family, he is said to have proclaimed, “No one deserves to inherit my throne more than Alexander.”

Use about 50 words.A festival you celebrate / Values of school games / My classmates / My pets / Teachers Day / The post man / Your school English Day/ A festival celebrated /Your school Sportsmeet • The Values of School Games • All schools make games compulsory for their students for several reasons. • First of all, games provide healthy exercise out in the open where the air is fresh and invigorating. This is essential especially after hours of sitting in a crowded classroom. Students welcome this as it is a welcome change from classroom activities. • Secondly, games help students to mix around and teach them to co-operate with their teams whether it be netball, football or basketball. This team spirit is vital as it encourages loyalty and discipline. • Furthermore, games teach students to take losses in the right spirit as they learn one cannot win all the time. By losing a match, students learn to accept failure or defeat and strive for a better performance in the next match. At the same time, they learn to give credit to the wining team and display good sportsmanship, thus strengthening a good relationship whether it is at school, district, national or international level. • Games help students to relax and forget the worries and problems they may have encountered in their school work. As the saying goes, 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'. To sum up, a healthy mind in a healthy body is what we need

  43. My Classmates • There are thirty-five students of all races in my class. They include Chinese, Malays, Indians, a Eurasian, an Arab and a Filipino. Shum, Ravi, Hamid and Johnny are excellent in studies and we are proud of them. • The funniest characters are Jim, Ronnie and Seng who are always joking and are the source of much laughter in the class. Jim is the fattest of all and we call him the 'Incredible Hulk'. Seng is as thin as a rake and we call him 'Grasshopper' or 'Coconut Palm'. Ronnie is always heard quoting wise sayings, so we call him 'Professor'. Then, there is Jack, an excellent dancer who is vain and very proud of his handsome look. We call him 'John Travolta' because he loves to dress after the star and takes pride in his appearance. I shall feel sorry when we have to part at the end of the school year.

  44. Teachers' Day • Every year, all schools throughout Malaysia celebrate Teachers' Day - a day to honour and remember our teachers who are our leaders and who guide us in our education during our youthful days. Teachers are very much a part of a student's life as they influence a child, right from Kindergarten days to Upper Secondary days; and perhaps beyond. It is they who prepare the child for his or her life in society. • Teachers' Day is held to show our appreciation to our teachers who work hard and bear patiently with us. In most schools, pupils bring gifts of flowers, presents and other tokens, which are sometimes hand-made, to show that they care for their teachers. A party is held where tasty refreshments and drinks are served in the classroom for both the teachers and the students. Everyone has a good time and the day ends earlier than usual. • Teachers play a very important role in the development of a child. However, their efforts are seldom appreciated. That is why Teachers' Day is so significant to teachers; it is only on this day that they are appreciated and honoured for their deeds.

  45. My Pets • have two pretty birds as pets. They are green-and-blue budgies. Their home is a shady tree in the garden where they are free to fly from branch to branch. Yet they are safe from the cat as the whole tree is inside a wire enclosure. I have nailed a wooden box on the tree. This is their 'nest' where they sleep at night and where they find shelter whenever it rains. My pets are called 'Polly' and 'Sally'. They enjoy flying about among the branches and they chirp happily all day long. Every morning, I feed them with birdseed and give them a bowl of water to drink.
