  2. Major Accomplishes • Ascended to the throne after his fifth birthday and ruled for 72 years longest reign of any European monarch, assumed control of the government at 18, after his advisor Mazarin died. • Very religious and knowledgeable "I am the state"

Cont. • Gave nobles grand lifestyle, got rid of their power, wanted the nobles to depend on him. • Palace itself amazing, used to overawe and impress. • Made France the cultural center of Europe, French became the new language of the social elite and educated classes. • Created a centralized state, made France modern.

Cont. • Versailles,where Louis held his royal court 10 mi from Paris, required nobles to stay in palace at least part of the year, distrusted nobles, used it to control nobles, did not want another fronde, watched nobles very carefully, opened letters, secret police, watched when they came and went etc.

Cont. • 1660 revoked Edict of Nantes, hurt economy (fewer skilled workers) did it for unity, also got rid of any different types of RC (jansenists, jesuits etc.) • 1660 married Maria Theresa • Spread his word and law by hiring intendants (liaison between central and local governments) • Wars • he controlled army

  6. Cont. • Expensive (tried mining all sliver and then taxing the peasants which caused revolts) • War of devolution • Louis wants unpaid dowry. • Ended up loosing everything he won in the war. • Dutch War • Revenge on the Dutch for defending the Spanish.

Cont. • Captured Spanish Netherlands, but Dutch kept him out of the united provinces by cutting the dykes. • Even sent troops into countries just to see if the countries would respond-War of the league of Augsburg. • Enemies didn’t try to make peace with Louis, wanted to defeat him, ended in basically a tie and Louis lost some territory and had to recognize king of England. • War of Spanish succession.

Cont. • Louis's grandson ascends to Spanish throne and British and Dutch want to keep France from getting bigger. • France unprepared, invaded, after, even Louis wanted peace. • Peace of Utrecht-divided some of France's lands. • Colbert changed finance, Louis XIV heavily in debt, reduced the debt through more efficient taxation, encouraged industry, manufacturers and inventors.

  9. Cont. • Mercantilism • More exports than imports, sell abroad, be self sufficient, buy nothing back, encouraged commerce in France. • Created strong merchant marines-settled in Canada all the way to Louisiana.

  10. Problems • Poor peasants too heavily taxed, so they emigrated and then the government had no one to tax. • France bankrupt when Louis dies.
