  1. Our “Safety & HealthOrientation”Training • This is one of the first of the training programs you will be involved in.

Welcome to CASS! • All of us at CASS want to Welcome You to Our Organization!! • We pride ourselves on providing quality, caring service to our clients and also, to providing a quality, caring work place for our employees and contractors. • We want to work to protect your safety and health and to do this, we need your active participation.

  3. Our goals for this Orientation Presentation • To explain our policies and our commitment to protecting your health & safety • To explain your responsibilities in ensuring that you and your colleagues are safe & healthy • We have a company Safety & Health Manual at the CASS office, call us if you want to read it • This orientation course and handouts are based on our company manual

  4. Management’s Responsibility • It is our job to ensure you are safe and healthy while at work for us. • We will provide the tools for you to do this and they include this orientation course, training and supervision and guidance.

  5. Your Responsibility as an Employee or as a Contractor • We need your full commitment to participate in our safety and health program. • We need you to work to protect your own safety and health and that of those around you. AND, • We need to you to ALERT us if you have any concerns about any part of the work representing a danger to your safety and health or to anyone else’s and call us immediately. We will address it and advise on how to proceed.

  6. The Alberta Safety & Health Legislation • As a worker you are protected under this safety & health legislation. • As a worker or as a company (management and the corporation) any one of us can be charged for failing to work safely, providing a safe work place, or causing harm to someone else • That means we all must work together to ensure we obey the laws, report hazards and incidents and keep ourselves and others safe and healthy.

  7. Right to Refuse for Danger • In Alberta, workers have the right to refuse work if they believe it is dangerous and the obligation also, to do so. • If you have any reason to believe work is dangerous, advise your immediate supervisor ASAP! • If they are not available call Management at the CASS office on Kensington Road

  8. Right to Know • All workers in Alberta have a right to know anything pertaining to their safety and health (except for medical records of other workers which are confidential) • We will advise you of the hazards and if you have any questions or concerns, we want you to ask them. • “No such thing as a dumb question.”

  9. Your Duty to Report1. Hazards • All personnel have a legal duty to report any hazardous condition or act that they see occurring and to complete a report form • Conditions in the residence, i.e., slippery sidewalks and no shovel, broken equipment, or an unsafe machine or equipment, etc. • Risks for our work: fatigue, stress, driving

  10. Your Duty to Report2. Incidents or Near Misses • Any incident that occurs involving property damage or injury (s) must be reported ASAP to your supervisor • Any near miss (or close call) must also be reported to your supervisor as soon as possible • WHY?, two reasons are our legal and moral responsibilities and another reason is so we can prevent them from happening again or in a near miss, so we can fix the problem so no incident will occur

Incidents involving vehicles and you and our clients • We want to know about these. • Handle the incident appropriately caring for any injured persons after you haveprotected the accident scene (pull over where possible out of line of traffic, use cones to show your vehicle is disabled, use flashing lights) • Call -911 for police and/or ambulance, and • Give aid to the injured where advisable • Contact CASS • Complete the incident report form

Emergency Evacuation • All of our buildings have an exit plan • During your orientation tour, we will show you the exits (you do not take elevators in case of a fire) • We have Fire Wardens who are identified with their red hats in the Kensington Rd. office who will guide you • You will go to our muster point where we meet and wait till the Fire Dept. gives our Fire Wardens the ‘all clear’ • Only then, will we re-enter the building

Emergency Evacuation – Our other buildings • You will get an orientation of the building and you will be shown where the exits are located and the muster points • The same principles will apply • (Details on fire pull stations, extinguishers and first aid kits for each location) • You will be advised on how you will know there is a fire or other emergency requiring evacuation (intercom, alarm bells, smoke detectors) • You will receive a package with the emergency response numbers and other information for you to keep with you.

Inspections – FacilitiesVehicles – Company Vehicle • All facilities will be inspected quarterly or as required • A basic checklist will be available • Supervisory personnel will show you how to carry these out • Corrections will be made ASAP or in a reasonable time • Records will be kept of inspections and completions of corrections • Vehicles: we require you to carry out regular inspections of the company vehicle and conduct daily visual inspections (checklist to be provided)

  15. Hazard Ratings • This rating system will be on the hazard report form. It will be used on inspection checklists so urgent matters are highlighted and dealt with quickly. • A – Major Hazard & Requires Immediate Action • B – Serious Hazard & Requires Short Term Action (Soon) • C – Minor Hazard & Requires Longer Term Action

  16. Personal Protective Equipment, PPE • CASS will determine what, if any, PPE is required for you to do your job. • In some cases hard toe boots and safety glasses have been needed. • In others hard hats have been required. • PPE requirements are rare and will be reviewed on a case by case basis with your supervisor. • If necessary, a hazard assessment will be done of the work to determine if such gear is required.

  17. Health Protocols • Employees should be familiar with & comply with Communicable Disease Regulations. To learn more we want you to research this on the www.calgaryhealthregion.ca website or contact them directly 403-944-7075 • Universal Precautions should be used at all times, for dealing with emergencies, for cleaning up bodily fluids

  18. Working Alone • In Alberta we have legislation on this. • At CASS, Communication is key and the supervisor and worker will set a system up for these kinds of scenarios (pagers, cell phones, check ins) • In case of emergency, the emergency contact list should be used along with -911 which is the first call you will make (see your handouts)

  19. Working Alone • You will have several mandatory training courses: First Aid, Abuse Protocol, and there are company safe work procedures you will be trained in • Later, you may receive CPI training

  20. Working Alone • Essentially, • Know the environment you are going to • Know of and understand the nature of the clients, support need (medications, behaviours, lifestyle etc.) • For residential: Be aware of others who may be at the residence (pets, family, friends and roommates)

  21. Journey Management • Any employee of CASS must inform the supervisor of travel plans outside the normal program, i.e., taking a one day trip to Banff or a lake etc. ANY trip must be pre approved. • In case of travel for longer than one day, the following is required: • Time of departure and arrival (to and from) • Who will be in vehicles • Colour, make, and license plate of vehicle • Planned route, roads, highway numbers • Any planned stops • Schedule of events when out of town • Phone numbers and/or pagers where you can be reached (this will be arranged on an individual basis with the supervisor) • (We will have a list of numbers to call on your behalf in case of an emergency at our head office)

  22. Alcohol or Controlled Drug Policy • Employees are not permitted to start work or remain at work if they possess or are using any of the following: • Alcohol beverages, any amount of alcohol is prohibited • Any controlled substance, illegal drug or derivative thereof, • Any other substance that could impair abilities to work competently or safely • This applies from report time until end of the shift

  23. Disciplinary Process • It is a three part process, details available from your supervisor • It involves, a verbal warning, a written warning, and then, suspension and possibly termination (and all situations are handled on a case by case basis)

  24. Training - Mandatory • Orientation Training (both HR and Health & Safety) • First Aid/CPR (refresher every 3 years) • Abuse Protocol • WHMIS • On-The-Job Training

  25. Training - Other • CPI • Medication Administration • Medical Issues – specific to the client • Positive Procedures/Restrictive Practices • Emergency Protocols

  26. (Safety) Meetings • Office Meeting • Residential Coordinators Meeting • Employment Team Meeting • Day Program Meeting • Occupational Health and Safety Meetings • Health & Safety Committee Meetings • Policy Committee Meeting

Basic Hazard Awareness • Before you begin your shift you need to go over a few points about the client, the work you will be doing, the hazards or issues at hand, the medications, behaviour issues (where applicable). • We want you to think over all the things you will be doing so you can go to work prepared. • If you have doubts or concerns about anything for that shift, contact your supervisor. • This applies to personnel working together and to those working on their own. • ** We must manage our hazards. First by identification, then by elimination or control.

  28. Other Communication Means: • Safety Bulletin Board: There is one bulletin board at the CASS office and it is designed for all CASS employees to read. • CASS Newsletter

  29. Communication • We welcome your comments, ideas, suggestions and feel free to discuss any issues with your supervisor • Also, we have our staff bulletin board located in the main office on Kensington • We have our Newsletter • And, our Health and Safety Committee • Website

  30. Health & Safety Committee • We have our committee which meets quarterly or more often if needed • The Committee welcomes any topics you wish us to investigate pertaining to any issue respecting health & safety

  31. Documentation • At CASS we maintain all records pertaining to any and all safety & health activities • During your on-the-job training, you will be advised on forms and locations so you can do your part to ensure this important documentation is kept.

The Legislation in Alberta • If you want to see the legislation, the head office at Kensington Rd. will have a copy for you to review. • You can also access this information on the Alta. government website: www.worksafely.org (“Workplace Health & Safety” is the box to click on) • 1-866-415-8690 is their number

Questions or concerns?? • Feel free to ask any questions right now. • Once you feel you understand the information presented we will ask you to sign an acknowledgement form that you understand the topics in this presentation. • We will show you the exits and basic emergency response plan for the building prior to signing the form.
