THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC

The Background of Conflict

  • Japan was the most powerful non-Western nation on the planet.

    • After successful wars against Russia in 1904-05, and as a member of the Allies in World War 1, Japanese confidence soared.

  • Japan was a small nation with little resources or living space.

    • It was this need for sustainability that prompted the Japanese to follow a plan of imperialistic expansion to meet its needs.

THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC

Building the Empire

  • Conquest of Korea in 1910.

    • This gave the Japanese a very close presence in the Manchuria region of China, well known for its resources.

  • Invasion of Manchuria in 1931.

    • Later, an attack on a military supply route by Chinese insurgents caused the Japanese to declare full war on China in 1937.

  • Signing of the Mutual Defense Axis Treaty with Germany and Italy in 1938.

    • As British, Australian, and American objection grew to Japanese expansion, Japan felt it necessary to find allies to help protect its interests.

THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC

Japan Formally Goes to War

  • After attacking British and French interests in Indo-China, the Japanese find that an American oil embargo is too much to bear for them, leading to the formal start of the war in 1941.
