  4. PRIMAL NATURE DEFINITION: • relating to an early stage in evolutionary development. - needs, fears, or behaviour(Frye’s level of consciousness & awareness) that form the origins of emotional life. 2. most important; primary or fundamental.

  5. Characterization • “She isn’t one of your North American girls, half B.A and half B.F and half good ecent spud – that’s three halves, but nevermind. She is of the earth, and her body is her shop and her temple, and whatever her body tells her is all of the law and the prophets” (208). - Not intellectual; she lives impulsively and according to her sexuality.

  6. Faustina’s primal nature • Described as someone who over-eats, and is consumed with sex and beauty (deadly sin of gluttony and lust). • Faustina taps into Dunny’s primal nature and exposes his shadow. • This makes Dunny recognize his change in character.

  7. Significance of name • Allusion to the Faustian Bargain. • The devil uses Gretchen to tempt Faust  Liesl kisses Faustina in order to approach Dunny about it, and seduces him. • Even in the magic show, Eisengrim appears as the devil, and Faustina as his temptress.

  8. Conscious vs. unconscious • Our collective unconscious contains our primal nature and desires. • Faustina acts on impulse and embraces her sexual instincts which makes her an archetype of a temptress. • She is Dunstan’s anima.
