  1. AVID Fall Parent Meeting Thursday, August 25th, 2016

  2. AVID TEAM MEMBERS • Ms. Morales, AVID 7th grade elective teacher/Co-coordinator • Mrs. Hamblen, AVID 8th grade elective teacher/Co-coordinator • Dr. Hacking/Mr. Hunter, AVID administrators • Ms. Ary, Counselor • Ms. Anderson, Counselor

AVID Content Teachers • Represents all disciplines and subject matters, including English, history, math, science, and PE • Since the beginning of Dana’s program in 2013-14, nearly ALL teachers have participated in intense AVID training • The expectation is that AVID strategies are common practice in all classrooms • AVID teaching strategies are a collection of the most exceptional teaching practices

What we will cover today: • A reminder of the goals of the program • AVID strategies to focus on this year (Cornell Notes, AVID binder, etc.) • Overview of AVID class (Day-to-day, special field trips, guest speakers, etc.) • Expectations for parent involvement (How can you support our endeavors for success in the program at home?)

  5. Program Goals • Advancement Via Individual Determination • Create a college-going culture • Support students who have demonstrated the potential to be successful in higher level classes • Promotes self advocacy • 4 year college ready/eligible

  7. AVID Strategies-Cornell Notes • Organizational note-taking strategy • Allows student to review important concepts more effectively in an easy to read format • An expectation in most content area classes • Sample Video Lesson

AVID Strategies-AVID binder/supplies All AVID students expected to have one • Heavy duty 3-ring binder, 3 inch rings • Six or more dividers with tabs to separate each class including AVID • Zipper pouch to store supplies • Two or more sharpened pencils • Pencil Sharpener • Two or more pens ( one red ink for grading) • Lined paper (25 sheets minimum to be kept in binder at all times) • Agenda • Cornell note paper • Eraser • Highlighter

  13. How can parents help? • Check Power School on a regular basis www.powerschool.ausd.net Need help getting set up? Contact me!

  14. What if my child’s grades drop below 2.5? • Meet with AVID Counselors and/or elective teachers -Academic progress counseling sessions • Monitor grades • Contact parents • Possible probation process • GSG focus on lowest grades

  15. Talk to your student about school • Be aware of your student’s classes and his/her performance in each. Praise your student’s strengths, and help him/her find ways to improve in areas of weakness. • Ask to look at your student’s binder • Review your student’s guided study group form to see what kinds of questions he/ she is asking in class. • Find out who your student’s friends are. • Be enthusiastic and supportive. Your student’s participation in AVID will keep him/ her motivated and excited about reaching the goal of attending four- year college or university.

Provide a quiet place free of noise and distractions where your student can study and do his/her homework. • Show that you care by asking your student what topic(s) he/she is studying in a particular class • Be positive and give praise when your student takes notes. • Be an audience for your student- listen as he/she recites or share what he/ she is reading. • Ask questions to help your student clarify or think more deeply about what he/she is reading. • Volunteer to help your student prepare for test by reviewing Cornell Notes
