  1. MAV & Small UAV Low Rn Workshop Ming Chang , Michael Ol- Workshop Chairs Sponsored by: APA Technical Committee 52nd AIAA ASM National Harbor, Maryland

  2. Low Rn Aerodynamic Modeling and Testing DG • Initiated by APA TC as a discussion group at 2012 ASM • Chaired Ming Chang and Hui Hu • Invited session at 49th ASM conference in Jan 2011 Chair by Michael Selig and Ming Chang on “Experimental Difficulties and Challenges in Low Reynolds Number Aerodynamics” • Based on community interest • First meeting at 30th APA conference June 2012 • Defined purpose of DG • Defined objective of DG

  3. Purpose • Bring together the community of researchers in this area to explore and share experiences, knowledge and technical capability in the design, fabrication and testing of MAVs, NAVs and HALEs. • Help to identify optimal application type for MAVs and NAVs (bio-inspired or fixed winged) and • Help define experimentation process (techniques, instrumentation and measurement process) in the Low Rn regime.

  4. Background Develop flight vehicles that operate in the very low Rn regime to mimic biological flight performances. Help to further our collective knowledge of tools and experimentation to gather the necessary data that characterizes low Rn flight Spearhead a process in which our tools and experimental capabilities can be utilized to develop MAVs to NAVs Expansion of our knowledge and capability into a regime we have never been before.

  5. Objective • Define useful products • Sponsor paper session • First invited session Jan 2013 “Low Reynolds Number Aerodynamic Modeling and Testing” • Sponsor workshops • First workshop “Low Rn Workshop” • Identify tools and processes to facilitate of Low Rn flight vehicles • Sharepoint site for Low Rn Aerodynamics https://info.aiaa.org/tac/ASG/APATC/LowRN-DG/default.aspx • Take a look at the site, has public and private site • Public site can be set up for discussions or blogs • Private site can be access by members only and can upload and down load documents

  6. LM Small UAV Design Considerations • Predominant KPP is Endurances. • Common theme for small UAV design is “Ease of Use” • The purpose for the platform’s existence governs the rest of the design considerations • Visual ISR requires platform stability, • High quality optics • Wideband encrypted comms • Positional accuracy • All air vehicle parts must serve two or more purposes • Avionics may also serve as structure • Pitot tube may also be an antenna

  7. LM Small UAV Design Considerations How waterproof does it have to be?  What environmentals drive design? Think: “Out of the Box”, but factor in components “Off the Shelf” to the extent possible Reliability, Reliability, Reliability What if it’s lost? Think about information assurance. How will the system be maintained? How will the system be transported?

  8. Announcement Low Rn Aerodynamic Modeling & Test Dicussion Group Meeting Wednesday January 15th, 7 to 8 PM in Potomac Ballroom 1
