  26. Estimated Annual Costs2012-2013 Average costs for an undergraduate California resident living in University housing: • Tuition and fees------------------$13,200 • Books and Supplies--------------$1,500 • Health Insurance Fee------------$1,300 • Room and Board-----------------$13,500 • Personal/Transportation-------$2,200 • Total Estimated Costs----------$31,700 http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying.html

  27. Typical Student Loan & Work Expectation for 2012 -2013 29 (Total cost on campus: $31,700)

  28. Blue and Gold Plan *** Covers 100% of tuition and campus-based fees *** • California resident with total family income under $80,000 per year • 4 years of undergraduate study only • Apply on time for financial aid • Demonstrate financial need • No special application

  29. Expect to work and borrow Every undergraduate seeking financial aid at UC will be expected to work (less than half-time) and to borrow a “manageable amount” of student loans It is no longer practical to “work one’s way through college” Finishing in four years saves money 31

  30. Student Responsibility: Part-Time Work UC expects that a student will work < 20 hours per week when enrolled, full time when not enrolled Job placement assistance is available on campus Students do not have to qualify for a work-study job in order to find part-time work, either on or off campus 32

  31. Costs Students Can Control Tips on Managing Costs 33

  32. Bring Down Expenses Finishing your UC degree as soon as possible Take required courses first, electives second Complete 15 units per term - quarter or semester – that’s really full time! You won’t finish in four if you enroll in only 12 units per quarter or semester! Attend summer school (some aid is available!) Applying for outside scholarships Working part time (< 20 hrs. per week during term) 34

  33. Bring Down Expenses Roommates – the more, the less Rent required textbooks – big savings! Recommended texts – use reserve copy at library Travel cost - purchase airline tickets way ahead of time or on sale, and car ride-share On campus meal plans – less is more Zip-Car – leave own car at home 35

  34. Bring Down Expenses Waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) if you are covered under another health insurance plan – while financial aid is offered to help you pay for the UC health insurance, the aid may be in the form of loans! 36
