  1. Welcome to 7th grade Academy Sharon Rice

  2. My credentials: • 25th year of teaching. • I hold a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Tyler. • Lifetime Texas teaching credential. • California Clear credential of Secondary math. • C.L.A.D. credential. • My family: • I have a 16 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. • Married 25 years (this Thanksgiving).

  3. Course description: 7th Grade Common Core Mathematics • What is Common Core? Understanding mathematics at the conceptual basis – and well enough to use the concepts to solve real-life problems. • Our students will work in the 21st century marketplace – and we need to prepare them. Many jobs require people to think, reason, and use technology wisely. • Common core math will not just require students to memorize and recite, but to evaluate and explore.

  4. Classroom guidelines: • Homework – only 1 or 2 days a week. • If a problem asks for an explanation, it should be written in complete sentences. • We record everything in our classroom journals. • We support the regular Math class – to help students gain confidence in Math!

  5. Grades: • Grades are posted weekly - here in classroom. • We send home grade reports for all students at the 3rd week and the 7th week. • If you are concerned, check their grades online at any time at Parent connect.

  6. Academy Grades 50% of Grades are on Improvement – we will take a pre-test and at end of Unit will take post-test to measure growth. 50% of Grade on Classroom activities. We will only have homework about 1 time per week.

  7. Math Academy • Reinforce Fraction skills • Math vocabulary • Test taking skills • Student confidence

  8. Math Academy • Computer portion – In September we hope to start our online portion using a Math program called Math XL. • This will help build skills but also teach them to solve multi-step problems.
