  10. New and Future Satellite/Data Feeds GOES-15 (2011 - 2017) Launched 06 Dec 2011 Replacement of GOES-11 Operational implementation – 08 March 2012 NPP (2011 - ) Launched 28 Oct 2011 Initial data receipt – 05 March 2012 COMMS – dedicated OC-12; AFWA  NAVO AFWA -- Backup Met Winds Initial retrievals - March 2012 Continuing correlation of GFS and WRF data fields with NOGAPS COMMS – dedicated OC-12; AFWA  NAVO COMS1 (2010 – 2017) Launch – May 2010 GOCI (Ocean Color) – retrieved from Korea Ocean Research and Development Inititive (KORDI) Meteorological Image(MI)r – anticipate acquiring via SeaSpace Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  11. New and Future Satellite/Data Feeds (cont.) Metop-B (2012 -- 2017) Launch – May 2012 AltiKa ( 2012 - 2015) Launch delayed to 3nd quarter 2012 (June 2012) CNMOC/NAVO/NRLSSC Science/Evaluation Team members EUMETSAT will provide operational support Sentinel 3 ( 2014 – 2017) Launch 2013/14 Follow-on to Envisat ESA primary data provider, EUMETSAT operational support Jason-3 ( 2014 – 2019) Launch April 2014 Operational support provided by NOAA ( same as Jason-2 ) Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  12. DSRC Upgrades and NAVOCEANO Model Transitions “A Taxing Endeavor” Systems and Operations will be in-flux. Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  13. DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC)Summer 2012 Full Refresh Both UNCLAS and CLAS mainframes will be replaced UNCLAS daVinci (IBM P6U1) UNCLAS Einstein (Cray MX5U2) and CLAS PASCAL (IBM P5C1) Selection to be announced APR 12. Anticipate 3 of the same - 2 UNCLAS (U1 & U2) and 1 CLAS (C1) Expected to expand capability 3X from ~34 to ~110 teraflops Will not know vendor, system, capabilities, etc., until announcement Small test development system (TDS) to be available APR 12 (128-256 cores) U1, U2, C1 delivery and testing in JUN 12 C1 will be first May be issues / delays with installation (water cooled– is current cooling adequate?) First user access ~1 JUL 12 Acceptance by ~1 AUG 12 Pascal (C) gone 30 SEP 12 (contract expires) Could be extended if schedule continues to slip and we have issues daVinci and Einstein (U) gone 31 DEC 12. Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  14. NAVO Model Ops DSRC Transitions Timetable (Always in Flux) MID-APR - 30 JUN (2.5 months) - system definition / scope / education / testing LATE-APR - 01 JUL (2 months) - test cases on TDS Likely lots of competition Small starter jobs: R-NCOM (64 cpus), SWAN (8 cpus), COAMPS (64 cpus), etc. Modeler involvement required 01 JUL - 01 OCT (3 months) - move CLAS models (Pascal) to C1 OCEAN_QC / NCODA GNCOM & HYCOM ??? ~10 RNCOM, & ~12 CNCOMs ~150 WAMS & WW3 (???, but doubtful) ~150 SWANS What else (PCTIDES, ...) MID AUG – END DEC (4.5 months) - move UNCLAS models (daVinci / Einstein) to U1 / U2 First priority is CLAS move, start UNCLAS a month later Probably move all to U1 with U2 as mirror site A few less domains than above Possible exception-- not GNCOM and only move HYCOM 1/12 Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  15. HYCOM Timetable (preliminary) 1 MAY- OPTEST report completed, submitted, and approved by end of APR. End MAY- Target UNCLAS HYCOM on Einstein producing pre-operational output OSMEs evaluate throughout month. MAY - 1 OCT- UNCLAS HYCOM and UNCLAS GNCOM to run in parallel on Einstein/daVinci through the summer. CLAS GNCOM continues as operational model. OPTEST evaluations continue (F Bub – AutoMetrics-based) JUL – AUG- CLAS GNCOM transition to the new DSRC system Pascal  C1, continues as operational model through summer/fall Internal Model comparisons AUG – SEP- CLAS HYCOM will be installed on C1 during the summer DSRC transition CLAS HYCOM will replace CLAS GNCOM by 30 SEP (If seamless transition) Pascal scheduled for decommissioning). OCT - NOV-UNCLAS HYCOM will be installed on new system U1 UNCLAS HYCOM will replace GNCOM by DEC. Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  16. NPP Acquisition and Implementation Status Launch– Oct 2011 COMMS (OC-12) online– 5 March 2012 Data Availability – 5 March 2012 Pitfalls and Challenges Original COMMS requirements six (6) months prior to launch not fulfilled Initial data throughput 0.5 Mbytes/sec/session @ 20 sessions Anticipated throughput ~ 45-50 Mbytes/sec Extensive coordination between NAVO and AFWA personnel has not significantly improved COMMS throughput; 3-4 Mbytes/sec/session @ 8 sessions WDA-4 JMBL 8/5 is insufficient to validate operational functionality/capacity Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  17. JPSS and IPDS Issues/concerns Navy working with JPSS Program on revised requirements and architectural options for CGS. What infrastructure is required? How and what data will be delivered/retrieved? Dedicated COMMS Line COPC Network How does NFG fit into data delivery (CTO 10-21) COST!! Who covers what? How much is Navy’s chunk? NAVOCEANO IDPS facility space is ready and awaiting final architectural design. Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.

  18. Questions??? Approved for public release. Distribution is unlimited.
