  2. Recruiting Your Leadership Team What category are you in today? I’m excited! I have my team and we are ready to go. I’m tired already! So much to do, so little time. I’m clueless. Where do I start?

  3. LeadingVolunteers Are you leading? Are you pushing? Are you winning? How many of you are giving 110%?

  4. You CAN’T give 110% You can’t keep that pace and expect to win You need to be a “lazy leader” Divide the workload and conquer Find a lot of volunteers who can give 20% Or 10%

  7. Make room for everyone who wants to help Make room for the elephant Make room for the giraffe As a chapter leader, you need to have as many people who want to volunteer to help you as possible Find a way so that they can share in the leadership experience

  8. Recruiting Your Leadership Team Understand that you and your team are creating experiences for your guests Your members need to have a great experience You need to put the Fun in FUNction! Find your party planners—they are your program team Find your athletes—they are your coaches for your education team Find your people persons—they are your hospitality team Find your sales people—They are your membership committee Find your tech geeks—they are your webmasters, twitters, your friends on Facebook

  9. Don’t be a Member Repellant! Time is a precious commodity Would you want to attend a function that does not add value? Would you want to attend an event that isn’t fun?

  10. Why will people want to volunteer to help you? People want to be a part of a group That’s why they join. Ask them to help you. Show that you respect them Show that you respect their time commitment (No matter how much or how little) Let them know that it mattered that they showed up to help

  11. Kick Off for Your Team Meeting Start strong Have an agenda Have time limits No MORE than 2 hrs at a time (shorter is better) Respect your volunteers time Share your vision for the year Listen with BOTH ears Recognize that there will be obstacles along the way

Charter for your team success Have contact information Know how your team members want to communicate Learn your team’s strengths and use them Casting What does your team need to know about you? Have ground rules Be prepared to enforce them Understand that stuff happens Communicate when it does! Come up with a Plan B, or C Allow people to say no

  13. Planning for your team’s success PULL information from the team, try not to push WRITE down your goals Establish an owner Know your budget $$$, time, people

  14. Group exercise How to make a great sandwich Look over the ingredients on the table Go back and write DETAILED instructions on how to make that great sandwich today using ingredients from the table

  16. What did we learn? Different levels of experience need different levels of direction You need to learn people’s capabilities Casting the right person in the right role

Closing the deal After you meet with your team Follow up with minutes Within 48 hrs of the meeting Don’t want people to forget Want your team to have time to work on their taskings so that they are prepared for the next meeting—not Last Minute Louie Thank them for coming Let them know that being there mattered to you and the rest of the team

  18. Understand that sometimes you have to let someone go It’s OK to “Fire” a volunteer Find out why someone isn’t performing Work issues? Family issues? Wrong casting? Can you re-cast in to a new role?

  19. Remember First impressions count You can’t un-do a first impression Make people feel welcome Last impressions count It seals the deal Make people feel welcome

  20. Celebrate Reward for a job well done From a simple thank you through paying an NES registration Budget for recognition You couldn’t have done it without them!
