Initially, they wanted the mountain to have sculpted faces of those who were important to the West. South Dakota historian Doane Robinson proposed Bu?alo Bill Cody, Sioux chief Red Cloud, William Clark, and Meriwether Lewis for the monument. However, when Gutzon Borglum agreed to be the project's primary sculptor, he decided to sculpt the four presidents of the United States in order to draw visitors from all across the country to the monument. This, however, was not possible because an existing congressional bill indicated that federal funding could only be used on work that had already begun on the project. Native Americans in the area oppose the sculpture. The Lakota Sioux Native American tribe was vehemently opposed to cutting into the sacred Black Hills when the monument was being created. They were especially opposed to displaying the faces of anyone who supported the Native American genocide on their holy mountain. Despite their intense objection, the contentious location was built. The Mountain Was Blasted With Dynamite To sculpt the faces, workers used dynamite to blast over 450,000 tons of granite o? the mountain. The majority of the blasted rock rubble was left in a large heap at Mount Rushmore's base. Around 400 people were working in this perilous demolition work. A Secret Room in President Lincoln's Head Borglum had a magnificent concept for Mount Rushmore National Park. He wished to construct an 80- foot-tall, 100-foot-long subterranean room behind President Lincoln's head. He wanted this area to be known as the Hall of Records and to house America's most important documents. Despite the fact that laborers began constructing a 70-foot-long cavern behind Lincoln's head, Borglum's design could not be accomplished because they ran out of money, and he died in the middle of the process. In 1998, however, 16 porcelain panels were added inside the hall. They discuss the history of Mount Rushmore and the United States. Unfortunately, this hall is not open to the public. Other Interesting Facts,here are some more Mount Rushmore National Monument facts: Even though it appears that President Roosevelt is wearing spectacles, this is an optical illusion. Borglum cut the frame's corners and the bridge of the spectacles to give the impression that he is wearing them. Mount Rushmore is a work in progress. Borglum also wanted to carve the presidents' bodies into the mountain, but he ran out of funds.
