THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD

THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD. Do not try to call them back to where they were, and do not try to call them to where you are, as beautiful as that place may seem to you. You must have the courage to go with them to a place that neither you nor they have ever been.

  1. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD

  2. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD Do not try to call them back to where they were, and do not try to call them to where you are, as beautiful as that place may seem to you. You must have the courage to go with them to a place that neither you nor they have ever been. Vincent Donavan

  3. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD For generations, we have understood mission in terms of revivalism, as if it were a matter of inviting those who aren’t yet Christian to return to their spiritual home, and they will do so if only we work hard enough, or manage to invent the right programme to speak to their needs.

  4. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD But this approach assumes that the culture of Christendom still exists and that there is an underlying current of Christian belief influencing the general population. To believe this is a form of denial, for the vast majority of people have no idea at all of Christianity. You cannot call people back to something they’ve never had. John Drane

  5. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD The sort of paranoia that church people can have about engaging with the wider culture is actually self-induced fear of stepping out into the public arena as Christians. John Drane

  6. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD The fact that Jesus was in the neighbourhood for 30 years says a lot about God and how he engages the human situation.

  7. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD The Incarnation shows us that God speaks from within a particular culture in ways that people can grasp, understand and respond to. The Incarnation gives us the primary biblical model of engagement.

  8. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD This is how God does it and we who follow his path should take a similar path.If missional means going out, being sent into the world, then incarnational means going deep into the culture. Alan Hirsch

  9. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD Let us go forth, then, let us go forth to offer everyone the life of Jesus Christ. I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it’s been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.

  10. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD I do not want a church concerned with being at the centre and which then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures.

  11. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD If something should rightly disturb us and trouble our consciences, it is the fact that so many of our brothers and sisters are living without the strength, light and consolation born of friendship with Jesus Christ, without a community of faith to support them, without meaning and a goal in life.

  12. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD More than by fear of going astray, my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us “give them something to eat” Pope Francis

  14. THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD * Examples of what you’re already doing* What are the barriers and how can we break them down?* What and where are the opportunities in our parishes, deaneries, Diocese?*What might we need to change to enable us to be more focused on Incarnational Mission?* What sorts of ministry do we need to grow / release to enable us to do this?
