Universities have to support the Knowledge Society and the Knowledge Economy • Universities have to develop a new mission: the University Third Mission (3M) • Teaching: not only to young people, not only academic knowledge • Research: not only basic research • Responding to the socio-economic environment in partnerships with business and community

Universities need deeper links with community and business for: • Making the educational system more effective by a continuous adaptation to the changing needs of the society and the economy: • Curricula development, better competencies • Work placements, direct job training • Use of updated technology • Making research more effective, efficient and oriented to the needs of the Knowledge Society • Running universities in a more efficient way with the cooperation of stakeholders avoiding isolation • Last, but not least, obtaining additional resources

How to develop successful U3M • Individual entrepreneurialism and leadership • Most initiatives are to a great extent based on individuals or networks of people with an entrepreneurial vision • Only after a certain level of development, these individual initiatives become institutional • The role of public authorities, private donors and enterprises • Initial funding, public or private • Mutual trust and commitment of local/regional authorities and enterprises. • Flexibility • Non bureaucratic legal status • Mobility (internal and external) of academic staff • Some strong and innovative points in universities • Not necessarily in research • Not necessarily in high technologies
