LCG Support

This note outlines a plan for testing and deploying R-GMA within LCG-2, focusing on network monitoring, publication and aggregation of accounting information, and job monitoring. The R-GMA roadmap includes setting up an R-GMA server in the Certification testbed, deploying the accounting application for testing, and gradually expanding functionality to the LCG-2 core sites. The aim is to incrementally deploy R-GMA while minimizing disruption to the ongoing LCG-2 deployment.

  3. The Use of R-GMA within LCG in 2004 • Ian Bird, Steve Fisher, Zdenek Sekera • R-GMA provides a convenient and valuable mechanism for many types of monitoring activity. LCG would like to deploy R-GMA as part of the LCG service, and see the following as applications that can make real use of the system: network monitoring, publication and aggregation of accounting information, and job monitoring (e.g. as requested and demonstrated by CMS and D0). The constraints of time and disruption to the ongoing LCG-2 deployment however, mean that we have to approach the deployment of R-GMA incrementally. This note sets out a plan for testing and deploying R-GMA within LCG-2. R-GMA

  4. Roadmap • RAL will provide effort to assist in the setup, deployment, and support of R-GMA for LCG sites. • LCG Certification team set up an R-GMA server in the Certification testbed. This can be used for testing within the testbed itself and by other CERN-based testbeds (e.g. the EIS testbed where experiments can access it). • This will be done by the end of February. • RAL will run the R-GMA registry service for the foreseeable future. • Initial application will be the GOC accounting application. RAL R-GMA team will work with LCG and GOC team (who?) to deploy the accounting application for testing on the CERN test system (i.e. that listed in point 2 above) first and subsequently to (a subset of) the LCG-2 core sites for initial testing. • Timescale for testing at CERN – March 15 • Prototype testing with limited core sites – March 30 • Together with CMS on the EIS testbed we will learn what the job monitoring requirements are and what needs to be set up within the LCG-2 service to achieve that. Once that is understood we will schedule deploying this functionality to the LCG-2 sites. • The network monitoring can be setup in 2 incremental steps: • the basic monitoring, doesn't need R-GMA, the big advantage, however, is that is will setup the basic architecture • extended monitoring, requires R-GMA server, the good thing is that it can use the same R-GMA server as the accounting and the monitoring. These servers will already be installed and functioning because of their deployment for accounting and monitoring, see points above. Robert Harakaly (WP7) plans to do the installation of 6.a) very soon. R-GMA
