  4. INDIA │ 18-20 august2010 virtual techdays THE SHAREPOINT SERVER 2010 CAPACITY MANAGEMENT MODEL

  5. INDIA │ 18-20 august2010 virtual techdays • Latency • Duration between the time a user initiates an action, such as clicking on a hyperlink, and the time until the last byte is transmitted to the client application or Web browser • Throughput • Number of concurrent requests that a server or server farm is able to process • Data scale • Content size and data corpus that the system can host. The structure and distribution of the content databases has a significant impact on the time it takes the system to process requests (latency) and the number of concurrent requests it can serve (throughput) • Reliability • Measurement of the ability of the system to meet the targets set for the latency and throughput over time CAPACITY MANAGEMENT The Four Fundamentals of Performance

  6. INDIA │ 18-20 august2010 virtual techdays • Boundaries • absolute limits that cannot be exceeded by design • Thresholds • a default value that cannot be exceeded unless the value is modified • Supported limits • define the tested value for a given parameter LIMITS AND BOUNDARIES

  7. INDIA │ 18-20 august2010 virtual techdays • Server Processing  Latency, Throughput, Storage • Wire Transfers  Latency, Throughput • Bandwidth, Size of Downloads  Latency, Throughput • Network Security  Latency • Network Configurations  Latency • Software Boundaries  Latency, Throughput • Security Trimming  Latency • Code: Round Trips, AJAX, JavaScript, CSS, etc.  Latency, Throughput CAPACITY ISSUES

  9. INDIA │ 18-20 august2010 virtual techdays • Physical Bottleneck Resolution • Processor - % Processor Time • Upgrade processor • Increase number of processors • Add additional server(s) • Total Bytes/sec • Investigate further by monitoring Bytes received/sec and Bytes Sent/sec. • Reassess network interface card speed • Check number, size, and usage of memory buffers • … REMOVING BOTTLENECKS
