  1. Importance of ATP • Powers every activity of the cell and organism • Living things need to store and release energy. • We store our energy as ATP

  2. 3 Phosphate Groups Adenine Ribose ATP • ATP= Adenosine Triphosphate

  3. ATP Composition • ATP is made up of: • Adenine base • Ribose sugar • 3 phosphate groups The energy comes from the bonds between the phosphates.

  4. How is energy released from ATP? • The bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphates are broken. • The energy released can be used for: • Active transport • Muscle contraction • Protein synthesis

  5. ADP • Adenosine Diphosphate • Only has 2 phosphates (instead of 3)

  6. LOSE 1 PHOSPHATE MITOCHONDRIA

  7. Compare ATP and ADP For your birthday you were given a Nintendo DS. You placed fresh new rechargeable batteries in the game boy so you could start playing. After a few months your Nintendo DS starts warning you that you have low batteries. • Does ATP represent the fully charged batteries or the low charged batteries? • Fully charged • Does ADP represent the fully charged batteries or the low charged batteries? • Low charged batteries

  8. ATP vs. ADP • ATP is like a fully charged battery. • ADP is like a partially charged battery. ATP ADP

  9. Checkpoint • What is the difference between ATP and ADP? • Where does the energy come from in ATP? • Provide an example of how cells use the energy provided by ATP.
