  2. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Communication devices provide a means for the control panel to contact a remote monitoring site to alert them of an alarm condition. • Control panels have a digital communicator built into the circuitry and provide an interface via screw terminals. • The typical means of establishing a communication link is to use an existing POTS line.

  3. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • In the event of an alarm the control panel will seize the line and automatically dial a preprogrammed phone number entered by the installer. • Digital communicators are connected to the standard voice grade line through a special jack called an RJ-31X (alarm panel jack). • This is an FCC approved device that separates the telephone company’s equipment from the security system equipment.

  4. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • The RJ-31X looks like a typical phone jack is sometimes called a biscuit jack. • The RJ-31X comes with an RJ-45 style line cord with all 8 conductors broken out into a pigtail.

  5. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • The RJ-31X is the first jack to be wired to the D-marc where the incoming dial tone enters the house. NETWORK INTERFACE (NI) LOCATED ON THE OUTSIDE OF A HOUSE, THIS IS THE D-MARC LOCATION.

INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • In the event of an alarm the RJ-31X will seize the line by energizing the seizure relay. • The activated relay disconnects the house phones and connects the communicator to the phone line. • After the communicator sends the signal and detects a signal called the kiss off tone, it de-energizes and the house phones are reconnected to the phone line.

INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • As an installer or technician you will be responsible for wiring the jack and ensuring that all of the house phones still work. • The RJ-31X uses the USOC (uniform service order code) color code which is an old AT&T standard. • Some of you may be familiar with the first four colors of the USOC color code, it is used for POTS lines……

  8. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • The USOC color code is listed below, these are the colors you will see in the RJ-31X and on the pigtail. • GREEN 5. BLUE • RED 6. ORANGE • BLACK 7. BROWN • YELLOW 8. SLATE

INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • The next slide will show how the 8 pin modular connector of an RJ-31X is pinned out. • The TIA/EIA 568B wiring standard for a comparable RJ-45 using the industry color code is shown as well. • And finally the next slide will also show you the side by side color codes comparisons.

  11. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • The incoming phone line gets wired to pins 4 & 5 and the house phones are wired to pins 1 & 8.

  12. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Here is the actual jack, notice the incoming POTS line goes to pins 4 & 5 (Red/Green), house phones are wired to pins 1 & 8 (Blue/Slate).

  13. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • In commercial installations you will have a dedicated POTS line for the alarm panel, however as stated early in residential installs you will use an existing POTS line. • Using an existing line will present some wiring challenges.

  14. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Existing wiring of phone locations, the CP has been placed and now the RJ-31X needs to be wired, a new cable is installed from the CP to the first jack wired to the D-marc.

  15. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • After the cable is installed you will re-wire the existing jack.

  16. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Wiring an existing jack, this jack essentially becomes a connecting block.

  17. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • An RJ-38X is also an alarm panel jack however it provides another level of security, it is a monitored jack so if someone tampers with the phone line the control panel will annunciate a status problem.

INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Some control panels have a wireless back up capability so that if the phone line is cut or service is interrupted the panel can dial out on a cellular frequency. • The control panel can also call the customer’s cell phone so that they know an alarm has been triggered at home and they can call the local authorities.

  19. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • If the customer has a DSL connection then a DSL filter will have to used, a special DSL filter for alarm panels is pictured below.

INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • A user can a an auto dialer for more comprehensive features not provided by the communication circuits in a control panel. • An auto dialer will call one or more programmed phone numbers in the event of a problem. • It can be used in conjunction with alarm panels to report basic alarm situations, or with temperature/environmental sensors to notify you of a change in temperature/water/etc.

  21. INTRUSION ALARM TECHNOLOGY • Also used for custom applications, an auto dialer can monitor and detect just about any condition you specify. • An auto dialer can be an effective choice for an un-monitored alarm system.
