  4. The Problem • Public schools in America teach a curriculum that is directed towards kids that know English as their first language. • About half of all Hispanic students are considered ESL. • Not all kids receive an equal education.

Whitman Elementary School • “The school board made it very clear in (a recent) student achievement committee meeting that they want a 30-day plan, 60-day plan, 90-day plan and year-long plan of how to turn the ESL program around.   15. Whitman Elementary Cont. • “You have to take the families as a whole unit. Are their parents undocumented? Is it hard for their parents to find meaningful, living wage work? Do they have enough to eat? Are they homeless? Are their lights on?   19. Activity • What program would you choose to teach ESL students, VoseElementary’s dual-language program, Whitman Elementary’s creative scheduling, co-teaching, or if you don’t agree with any of these you can make up your own?

  20. My Opinion • I personally think that the dual-language program is the best option, because it allows each student to receive an equal opportunity to learn.
