AAEE - THE BEGINNING • Why a Certification Organization? • American Institute of Sanitary Engineers • Joint Committee for Advancement of Sanitary Engineers • Resolution - an organization that would address professional certification and not compete • American Sanitary Engineering Intersociety Board Chartered October 21, 1955

  3. AAEE - THE MISSION AAEE is dedicated to excellence in the practice of environmental engineering to ensure the public health, safety, and welfare to enable humankind to co-exist in harmony with nature.

OBJECTIVES • Identify & credential expert environmental engineer • Support environmental engineering education • Educate public on environmental systems and issues • Promote use of credentialed experts • Recognize excellence in environmental engineering practice • Facilitate partnering for environmentally beneficial projects

  5. DIPLOMATE ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER - THE DEE • An internationally recognized board certification granted by the AAEE • Certification program accredited by the Council of Engineering Specialty Boards Many of the Leaders in the Field are DEEs

  6. DEE Qualifications • Bachelor’s or advanced engineering degree • Minimum 8 years of full-time professional experience (typical 12-15 years) • Professional Engineer’s (P.E.) license • Successful completion of written and oral exams • Required continuing practice and ongoing professional education

  7. DEE SPECIALTY CERTIFICATIONS • Air Pollution Control (AP) • General Environmental Engineering (GE) • Hazardous Waste Management (HW) • Industrial Hygiene (IH) • Radiation Protection (RP) • Solid Waste Management (SW) • Water Supply/Wastewater Engineering (WW)

  8. MEMBERSHIP • 200 applications to first Board meeting (1956) • Over 1,000 certified members by start of 1960s. • Peak membership at 2,600 in 1990 • Dropped to 1,900 in 2001 • Increased to 2,300 in 2004 Building Membership While Sustaining Quality - Our #1 Goal
