Density

Density. Density - the measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume D=m/v Density = mass Volume. Example: A block has a regular shape. Volume = L x W x H V= 3 cm x 2 cm x 4 cm V= 24cm3 Units: cm3 or mL 1cm3=1 mL. Formulas.

  1. Density Density- the measurement of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume D=m/v Density = mass Volume

  2. Example: A block has a regular shape Volume= L x W x H V= 3 cm x 2 cm x 4 cm V= 24cm3 Units: cm3 or mL 1cm3=1 mL

  3. Formulas Solving for Volume Solving for Density Write the formula Plug in the values Solve D= m/v D= 179.9g/333.3cm3 D= 0.5 g/cm3 • Write the formula • Plug in the values • Solve Ex. Block • V= L x W x H • V= 10.2cm x 8.6 cm x 3.8 cm • V= 333.3 cm3

  4. Water Displacement method is used for irregularly shaped objects like a rock or a marble. If you start at 7 mL and end at 9mL after the object is dropped then you must subtract to get the density. 9mL-7mL=2mLChange the 2mL to 2cm3 since it is an object.

  5. Calculating density after water displacement If the rock had a mass of 16 grams and the volume was 2cm3, then you just use the formula to solve. D=m/v D=16g/2cm3 D=8 g/cm3

  6. Physical Changes Physical change- a change that alters the appearance of a material but doesn’t make that material into something new. Examples: Tearing paper, chopping wood, molding clay, cutting hair, mixing salt and pepper

  7. Physical properties Physical property-characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into something new. Examples: Malleable-can be hammered, molded or flattened into a thin sheet (like a thin piece of metal). Ductile-can be pulled into a wire Luster-shiny

  8. More Physical properties Color Odor Taste Hardness Rough Smooth Texture Boiling point Freezing point Melting point Density Dull

  9. Chemical change and chemical properties A chemical change is a change in matter that produces a new substance. 5 clues to a chemical change • Permanent color change • Gas given off • Heat given off • Precipitate formed • New substance Chemical Properties Flammability-ability to burn (combustible) Reactivity- ability to react (like to water or air)

  10. Properties of Metals • Good conductors of heat and electricity • Malleable • Ductile • Have high melting point • Shiny • ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

  11. Properties of Nonmetals • Poor conductors of heat and electricity • Brittle (break easily) • Low melting point • Dull ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

  12. Properties of Metalloids • Have properties of both metals and nonmetals • Semi-conductors ON THE STAIR STEP OF THE PERIODIC TABLE
