  3. Energy is… • Energy is the ability to do work, to cause change. • Work is done when an applied force causes a movement over a distance. Work is measured in joules. • Things that move cause change. • A force is a push or a pull. • Energy is not matter.

  4. Energy is… • Everything around you has energy but you only notice it when a change or transformation takes place. • Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed. This is known as the Law of Conservation of Energy.

  5. Kinetic Energy • One of the two ways that energy can be categorized is as kinetic energy. • Kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to its motion. If it doesn’t move then it doesn’t have that kind of energy. • Kinetic energy depends on speed and mass. An object’s kinetic energy can be determined by mv2/2 (mass times velocity squared divided by 2) • The faster an object is moving the more kinetic energy it has. • The heavier an object, the more kinetic energy.

  6. Kinetic Energy • The faster an object goes the more kinetic energy it has. • The heavier (greater mass) an object is the more kinetic energy it has.

  7. Potential Energy • An object can have energy even if it is not moving! • Energy stored in an object due to its position is called potential energy.

  8. Gravitational Potential Energy • Gravitational potential energy is dependent on height and weight. The higher or heavier an object, the greater the potential energy.
