  1. Strategies Amanda Sikora Randi Markley

  2. Bryan Bryan is in the first grade and has a learning disability. He is unable to read at the level he should be at for his age. He is normally by himself in the classroom and out at recess. He seems to not be able to communicate well with his peers. At times he will get very angry when someone tries to help him or correct him on his work. He also has a hard time writing. He cannot write like those his age. He needs as much help as he can get in the classroom so he can learn just like all the other students around him.

  3. Role Playing Students in class are to read the book The Tortoise and the Hare in class. Bryan does not quite understand the story, so Bryan and the rest of the class would get to act out the story while it was being told aloud. This would help Bryan, and even the rest of the class, to understand what the story is about.

  4. Story Map Along with the role playing for the book The Tortoise and the Hare Bryan could make a story map. This would help him see the sequence of events happening in the story and better understand what is being told in the story.

  5. Breaking Down The Steps When explaining to Bryan how to do his story map the steps for each section of the story map could be broken down and done at separate times. The story could also be read over again so that Bryan could do the steps one at a time instead of trying to pick out each step as the story is being read one time.

  6. Sophie Sophie is also in the first grade and has autism. When the student is being talked to they do not look the other person in the eyes, they tend to look away. They do not keep a conversation going for a long period of time, and typically she will not start a conversation. She is very shy and usually is by herself in the classroom. She repeats many phrases and has some repetitive movements. When she wants to point at something she will use the other person’s hand to point instead of her own. She is having a hard time learning in the classroom and needs help so that she can learn everything that she is able to learn.

  7. PECs system (Picture Exchange Communication System) This system works by making cards or big pictures of what the student wants and that is how they communicate. If the student wants something to eat they can have a card with different pictures of items to eat and they can pick the one from the card that they want. The student would be able to communicate without having the frustration of looking for the word that they wanted to use. It makes communication easier for the student.

  8. Hands On While reading the book The Tortoise and the Hare Sophie could have little stuffed animals she holds and uses to help tell the story. While the story is being read aloud Sophie could hold on to the stuffed animals. The other students could also be there to help her tell the story with the stuffed animals.

  9. Reduce Distractions While reading the book the room would have to be quite and the students would have to be sitting at their desks. As well as the students have to have everything put away and the only thing that can be on their desks are things they need to use to help them understand the story, such as Sophie’s stuffed animals, or Bryan’s story map.
