  2. Childhood • Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809. • Edgar was born in Boston Massachusetts • He had two other siblings- William, his older brother- and Rosalie, his little sister.

  3. Childhood • Edgar's mother was Eliza Arnold Hopkins Poe. • Edgar's father was David Poe.

  4. Childhood • Edgar's father deserted the family.- He was believed to have died around December 1811 • Edgar's mother died on December 8, 1811 • Edgar went to live with the Allan family- hence his middle name. • William went to live with family in Baltimore and Rosalie went to live with the Mackenzie family.

  5. Adulthood • Edgar had went to the University of Virginia • He was forced to withdraw from the university due to gambling debts that he could not pay off • In 1827 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, but was later discharged

  6. Adulthood and Achievements • At around the age of 18, Edgar had wrote his first book of poetry. - "Tamerlane and Other Poems" • His creativity with his writing led to the beginning or different and or new literary genres. • He earned the nickname "Father of the Detective Story".

  7. Adulthood and Achievements • In 1836, Edgar married his first cousin, Virginia Clemm. ( Later known as Virginia Poe) • She was 13 years old when she married Edgar. • In 1847, Virginia died of Tuberculosis

  8. Adulthood and Achievements • In 1843 Poe had won a literary prize for one of his works called "The Gold Bug". • In 1845 Poe wrote the literary sensation, "The Raven".

  9. Adulthood and Achievements • Edgar Allan Poe did many things during his lifetime. He was a writer, a poet, a critic, and an editor. • Poe's works are still considered to be widely popular today.

  10. Adulthood and Achievements • Edgar Allan Poe was thought to become one of America's most enduring and best known writers.

  11. Adulthood • Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. • He was only 40 years old when he died • He supposedly died from "congestion of the brain". Some people don't believe that's how he died though... • His last words were - "Lord help my poor soul".
