  1. The Parallels and Contrasts ofRomans 5:12-19 1. If the Holy Spirit has set up an unbreakable parallel, then we do well not to tamper with it. 2. The giving of Adam’s sin and guilt to his humanity is set up as an unbreakable parallel to the giving of Christ’s righteousness and grace to His humanity. 3. Therefore, imputation of sin/guilt and the imputation of righteousness/innocence are truths that cannot be tampered with.

  2. Overview of Romans 5:12-19 Rom 5:12Paul begins explaining through what we have our reconciliation (c.f. Rom 5:11)—Paul never finishes his thought, the dependent clause stands alone. Rom 5:13-14 Paul does away with Jewish objections Rom 5:15-17 Paul lays the contrasts of the parallel he is trying to make. Rom 5:18-19 Paul restates his dependent clause from verse 12 and finishes his original thought and sets up the parallel between Adam’s Sin and Christ’s righteousness through which we have reconciliation/justification.

  18. A New Translation: Romans 5:12, 18-19 Context: Verse11, ESV, “We also rejoice in God THROUGH our Lord Jesus Christ, THROUGH whom we have now received reconciliation.” 12 THROUGH this: just as through one man sin came into the world and through that sin death and thus death came into all humanity [in Adam]because all sinned--- 18 Therefore, just as through the act of trespass of one there is intoall humanity [in Adam]condemnation so also through the act of righteousness of one there isinto all humanity [in Christ]justification of life. 19 For, just as through the disobedience of one man many were constituted sinners, so also through the obedience of one manmany will be constituted righteous.

  19. The Parallels within the Contrasts Romans 5:15-17 Example Contrast Statement: War is not like peace. For if we are fighting, then we are not loving. Contrasts: 1) War and Peace; 2) fighting and loving. Parallels within the Contrast statement: • War and fighting • Peace and loving

  20. The Parallels within the Contrasts Romans 5:15-17 Verse 15 Contrast Statement: But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. Contrasts: 1) Gift and Trespass; 2) giving of death and the “much more” giving of grace. Parallels within the Contrast statement: • The one man and the One Man Jesus Christ • The many and the many

  21. The Parallels within the Contrasts Romans 5:15-17 Verse 16 Contrast Statement: And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. Contrasts: • That Coming Through the Gift and that coming through the sinning; • Judgment and gift • Victory of condemnation and victory of justification. Parallels within the Contrast statement: • INTO Justification and INTO Condemnation

  22. The Parallels within the Contrasts Romans 5:15-17 Verse 17 Contrast Statement: For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Contrasts: • Reign of death and reign of life; • Death reigning and ‘those who receive’ reigning ; • Abundance of grace, the free gift and death. Parallels within the Contrast statement: • Reigning THROUGH the one man and reigning THROUGH the one man Jesus Christ • BY the trespass of one and BY the righteousness of one
