STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Lesley Monk Balfron High School Session 2005.6 Although you have access to one of the textbooks as you go through these lessons, you will NOT have them for revision for your exams. All the notes in your jotter will be needed for this revision, so it is VITAL that your jotter is kept at the highest standard!

  3. 8 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER YOU are responsible for work in this course. If you are absent, ask a friend what you missed, and make sure that you get caught up! Find out if there were any handouts you missed and ask the teacher, using its number. It is easy to fall behind, but difficult to catch up again!

  4. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER • INTRODUCTION • What do I need to know? • The elements of the weather • The methods used to forecast the weather • The weather associated with fronts, depressions and anti-cyclones. • The effects of weather on people.

  5. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER You also need to develop skills called ENQUIRY SKILLS. • How and where to gather weather information by measuring and observing the weather elements and recording them on weather maps. • How to process weather information by using line and bar graphs. Also how to analyse weather information. • We will be looking at ES later in the topic.

  6. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER MEASURING AND RECORDING. Using page 9 of the ‘PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT’ textbooks, (from now on called the textbook),copy the 2A heading and table ( fig.2.1) that tells you the ELEMENTS that make up weather. Now take a copy of the book in class called ‘STUDIES IN GEOGRAPHY 2’, pages 6 and 7. Copy the seven notes on the elements found there;- Temperature, air pressure, cloud, rainfall, wind, visibility and sunshine.

  7. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER In the last couple of pages we have used the term RAINFALL, but this is not the proper term in weather studies. It should be called- PRECIPITATION BELOW THE LINE This means all the types of moisture that falls from the sky! HAILSTONES DRIZZLE SNOW SLEET RAIN

  8. 1 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER There are sketches of the weather ‘instruments’. Use the textbooks pages 9,10,17 and 18 to add labels to your copy showing the important parts. Always label neatly and in the same style. Labels are always best done in PENCIL. Stick in your completed sheet neatly. A B C D Not only do you need to be able to sketch and label the instruments in an exam question, but you need to be able to explain in DETAIL exactly how they work!

  10. 2. Then you can choose to do any mixture of FOUNDATION, GENERAL CREDIT or EXTENSION questions. Do a total of six questions for this bit. Part 1 1.Everyone should do all the CORE ( blue) questions on pages 10 and 11 of the textbook.

Part 2 1.Everyone should do questions 1-7 of the CORE ( blue) questions on pages 20 of the textbook.

  12. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER PLEASE NOTE; there is a spelling mistake in the book; millibars should have two l’s, not one! (do not alter the books! ) In class, answer the questions on the next slide about the elements.

  13. STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER • 1.How do we describe wind direction? ( I’m looking for one special 4-letter word in your explanation!) • The compass direction the wind is coming FROM • 2. Explain why the wind instruments are always located in the open. • So they are not sheltered. • 3. What units are used to record wind speed? • MILES or KILOMETRES PER HOUR, or KNOTS • 4. What is the difference between a barometer and a barograph? • A Barograph records the reading, the barometer only measures it. • 5. What units are used to record sunshine? • HOURS

  14. 2 STANDARD GRADE GEOGRAPHY WEATHER Most questions about gathering weather data involve finding out if you know how the instruments work and where to locate them, and different ways data comes to meteorologists. These two elements have a handout to read, about how they are measured and recorded. Some elements do not have an instrument, but data is gathered by observation and recording only. Two of these are;- CLOUD COVER and VISIBILITY.
