  3. The Debt Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906) THIS is the debt I pay Just for one riotous day, Years of regret and grief, Sorrow without relief. Pay it I will to the end— 5 Until the grave, my friend, Gives me a true release— Gives me the clasp of peace. Slight was the thing I bought, Small was the debt I thought, 10 Poor was the loan at best— God! but the interest!

  6. The 13th Amendment ABOLITION OF SLAVERY “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

  7. The 14th Amendment THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of the law” Ex: Brown vs. Board of Ed

  8. The 15th Amendment VOTING RIGHTS “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

  13. REVIEW • Southern legislatures’ response to the 13th Amendment was to pass “black codes” that denied African Americans many of their rights as citizens
