  3. Thank you for coming! • Thank you for attending our PVHS AVID 9 Parent Night! The purpose of this event: 1. Introduce ourselves and meet you 2. Give an overview of AVID and the next 4 years. *This isn’t a time to discuss your child’s grades. Please contact us to schedule a time to do so if needed.

Over 30 years, AVID has become one of the most successful college-preparatory programs for underserved students, and today reaches more than 400,000 students in approximately 4,500 schools in 47 states and 16 other countries/territories. AVID: 30 Years of Success Since 1990, more than 85,500 AVID students have graduated from high school and planned to attend college.

What is AVID? • A structured, college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts • A direct support structure for first-generation college goers, grades 4-12 • A schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor adopted by more than 4,500 schools in 47 states and 16 countries • A professional development program providing training throughout the world

  7. The Mission of AVID AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

  8. What Does typical week look like? Monday: Articles (AVID Weekly)/Projects Tuesdays: Tutorials Wednesdays: Articles (AVID Weekly)/Projects Thursdays: Tutorials Friday: Binder Checks/Games

  9. How can I support my child in their studies? They should be working in a quiet place, studying at the same time each day. • Eliminate distractions: phones, tablets (unless they are typing a paper), tv. • Check in with them/talk to them about how their classes are going/school is going.

  10. How can I support my child in their studies? • Check their agenda/planner. They are required to write down their homework, projects and assignments. • Ask them to show you their binder and backpack. • 2 hours daily of uninterrupted study time. • Get in touch with their teachers and counselors if you notice any grades dropping or if you have any questions.

  11. Aeries • Check their grades on Aeries weekly. • All grades are posted on Aeries, which you access on the PVHS website’s front page. • If you did not receive a password, we can help you after our session to retrieve it.

  12. Advancement Via Individual Determination Maintain a 2.8 GPA (minimum). Join 2 clubs 50 hours of community service *If students fail to maintain the required gpa, they will be placed on probation until their grades come up. Parents will be notified.
