  2. Genesis 3:8–10 (ESV) 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

  3. Genesis 3:11–13 (ESV) 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

  4. Genesis 3:14–15 (ESV) 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

  5. Genesis 3:16 (ESV) 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

  6. Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV) 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

  7. Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV) 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

  8. Genesis 3:20–21 (NIV84) 20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

  9. Genesis 3:20–21 (NIV84) 20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

  10. Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV) 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

  13. Ephesians 6:12–13 (ESV) 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

  14. Genesis 3:16 (ESV) 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

  15. The Struggle for Dominance

  16. Note the last two letters of the word God uses for pain: עִצָּבוֹן=itstsabon

  17. Never shift blame to others for the choices you have made in your life, pray instead: Luke 18:13 ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’

  18. Genesis 3:16b (ESV) …Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

  19. What does this word, “Desire” mean? תְּשׁוּקָה teshuqah Means “a prompting to evil.”

  20. After the fall, God warns that the woman at her worst would be a nemesis to the man, and the man at his worst would dominate the woman.

  21. Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV) 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

  22. Genesis 3:21 (NIV84) 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

  23. Genesis 3:17–19 (ESV) 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

  24. In this symbolic act we see that only God can adequately cover the shame of our sin.

  25. What does God want us to learn from these passages? As a result of their sin: Eve led her husband to sin, and now she would suffer under his leadership. Adam sinned by eating, and now he would suffer to eat. Together they brought pain into the world by their disobedience, so now they would experience painful toil throughout their lives. The serpent tempted them into disobedience, so Satan will be destroyed.

  26. Only faith in Christ overcomes the doom of the curse.
