  1. 9th grade Midterm Madness Richard_Malt@hcpss.org

  2. What counts? • In order to pass a class, a student must earn at least .75 points for the year. To calculate, add all of the quarters together using the county assigned numbers below, multiply that number by 2, add the two exam grades, and then divide by 10. 1st Q 2ndQ 3rdQ 4thQ Midterm Final Example-- D C D A C C 2 4 2 8 2 2 Total = 20/10 = 2.0 • A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, E = 0 • The student must pass at least one quarter in the first semester and one in the second semester OR the student must pass both of the last two quarters of the year. Failing both the third and fourth quarters is an automatic failure for the year. Failing three quarters is an automatic failure. • Promotions • To be promoted to grade 10, students must have five credits including one English • To be promoted to grade 11, students must have ten credits including two English • To be promoted to grade 12, students must have fourteen credits including three English

  3. Science Exams • Introduction to Ecological Systems • Teacher generated exam including multiple choice and brief constructed responses (BCRs) including released High School Assessment (HSA) questions. • Review session after school. • Earth & Space Science (Regular and GT) • Cumulative County Assessment including multiple choice and 1 BCR. • Review session after school. • Biology GT • Cumulative County Assessment (multiple choice and constructed response) including a GT Addendum (multiple choice and short response). • Review session during class time. Review packet.

  4. Social Studies Exam • US History Regular/Honors/GT • Cumulative County Assessment including teacher generated multiple choice questions and essay. • Differentiated by level. • Review session held after school.

  5. English 9 Exam • English 9 Regular and Honors • County Assessment and teacher generated multiple choice, short answer, and matching questions. • Review session will be held in class and after school. • Differentiated by level. • English 9 GT • County Assessment and multiple choice exam including: • Vocabulary units 1-4, participles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, dangling modifiers, appositives, and absolutes. • Macbeth • Figurative Language: metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and personification • Point of View • Symbolism, Theme, Tone, Mood, and Imagery • Identification of parts of an essay

  6. Math • Math midterms have been restructured to meet Common Core standards and newer HCPSS Curicculum. • General Math Midterm Information: • Multiple choice questions and application (short answer) • Math review sessions will be held after school.

  7. Foreign Language • Latin 1 – 120 multiple choice questions, reading, and translation. • German 1 – County assessment including 50 multiple choice, 1 BCR, and a speaking section. • French 1 – Includes listening and reading multiple choice questions, 1 short essay and grammar fill-ins, and a speaking section totaling 65 questions. • French 2/2Honors – 60 multiple choice questions, 2 short essays, 20 short answer questions, and a 10 point speaking section. • Spanish I/II Honors – 65 point multiple choice listening and reading, 15 point fill ins and short answer questions, 10 point writing section, and 10 point speaking section generated by the county. • Italian I – 90-100 multiple choice questions including listening, reading, grammar/vocabulary, writing, and speaking. • Review sessions will be held during class time.

  8. Physical Education Exams • Lifetime Fitness • County assessment including 75 multiple choice questions and a BCR. • Review sessions will be held during class time prior to exam. Review sheets will be handed out in class. • Health • County assessment including multiple choice and a BCR. • Review sessions will be held during class time. Review sheets will be handed out in class on 1/3/2013 and 1/4/2013

  9. Introduction to Engineering Design • Exam includes 50 multiple choice questions and a 50 point “application of knowledge” section. • Students will be allowed to use a ½ sheet of hand written notes for the exam. • Students will review in class.

  10. Computer Science 1 • Exam will include 75-100 multiple choice questions and programming. • Students will review in class.

  11. Family and Consumer Science • Exams will be a collaboration of 75 multiple choice quiz and test questions from previous units. • Student have copies of previous tests and quizzes to use as a study guide. • Review will take place during class time.

  12. General Midterm Information • Every class must have a midterm exam. • Ask your student, check Teacherweb, contact teachers. • MIDTERMS CANNOT BE GIVEN PRIOR TO EXAM DATE. • Make-up exams to do emergency should be scheduled with the teacher as soon as possible. • Most midterms are cumulative.

  13. Tips for Midterm Success • Start studying early and review a little each day. Don’t cram. • Take time to organize and clean out notebooks. • Create a study plan for each day and take advantage of ½ day bell schedules to get a jump start on studying. • Check websites for review information and review sheets. • Pay attention to review dates and exam information in class. • Take advantage of Break and after school sessions to ask questions and be prepared. • Eat and rest well.

Midterm Madness Review Schedule • Monday - 1/7/2013 – Science • Tuesday – 1/8/2013 – English • Wednesday – 1/9/2013 – Math • Thursday – 1/10/2013 – Social Studies • Friday – 1/11/2013 – Foreign Language • Review session structure – Differentiated by class. (i.e. some teachers lecture while others hold Q/A and review more thoroughly in class).

  15. Midterm Exam Schedule • Tuesday – 1/15/2013 – Regular bell schedule – Per. 4B Exam • Wednesday – 1/16/2013 – ½ day – Per. 1 & 2 Exams • Thursday – 1/17/2013 – ½ day – Per. 3 & 4A Exams • Friday – 1/18/2013 – ½ day – Per. 5 & 6 Exams • Inclimate Weather – See handout. • Important Dates: • 1/18/2013 – End of 2nd quarter. • 1/21-1/22/2013 – No school for students. • 1/29/2013 – Report cards issued.
