  1. Year Up NYC at a glance Lisette Nieves, Executive DirectorSeptember 2007

  2. Background • Founded in 2000 to serve low-income urban young adults • An intensive one-year program that provides technical and professional skills, paid apprenticeships and college credit • A program based on high support and high expectations • 50% of operating revenue comes from apprenticeships • Sites in Boston, Providence, Washington, and NYC • Over 500 students a year, growing rapidly – NYC will serve over 100 students a year by end of 2007

  3. Urban youth face many challenges • 4M “disconnected” young adults in the US; • 200K in New York alone • 70% of urban high school graduates are not prepared for either college or a livable wage job • The federal minimum wage of $5.15 per hour is not a “livable wage” in most cities • Nearly 80% of new jobs require some kind of education or training beyond high school Year Up’s mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.

  8. Student successes are tangible Year Up has demonstrated that it has the ability to deliver a high-quality program that makes an enormous impact on the lives of our urban youth and provides immense value for corporations. We are committed to our relationship with them and look forward to their continued growth. David Fike, Chief Technical Officer, Marsh & McLennan Companies Year Up presented a solid business case for an alternate source of talent; information on the operational model and level of training students receive was very helpful. The program management was very knowledgeable about the corporate environment and its needs. Aisha Petit-Thomas, Vice President, Campus Recruiting and Diversity, Lehman Brothers The brilliance of Year Up is that it takes two groups that are rarely discussed in the same breath – youth at risk and big corporations – and brings them together by building a partnership that creates benefits for both. Year Up provides access to talented and motivated young workers and Merrill Lynch provides access to jobs and career opportunities. Diane Schueneman, Head of Global Infrastructure Solutions, Merrill Lynch

  9. Students Recognize Their Potential Without the program I would not be at Merrill Lynch with a bunch of helpful people that want me to succeed just as much as the Year Up staff and I am truly grateful and emotional at the same time because my life has never been this easy and its thanks to every one sitting in that office. John Sherman, graduate, hired by Merrill Lynch The support we are receiving here is over the top. The staff here at Lehman are absolutely great. We just received our workstation and by the end of the week we will receive our blackberries and telephones. We blast computers (install application) and tomorrow we will be changing about 100 monitors. Shavon Betances, graduate, hired by Lehman Brothers My first IT fix involved the manager's monitor, which kept flickering on and off. When the secretary told me she jammed the cord in the monitor I assumed it was a bad cord. I was right, I just had to come back up to my office grab a cord and replace it. They looked at me like a miracle worker. Jayson Irizarry, graduate, hired by Carlyle Group

  10. Corporate Partners • American Express • Bank of America • The Carlyle Group • JPMorgan Chase • Lehman Brothers • Marsh & McLennan • Merrill Lynch • Morgan Stanley • Mt. Sinai Medical Center
