  1. Objective Name and draw translations. A translation slides each point of the plane the same distance in the same direction. The sliding of a checker on a checkerboard is an example of a translation.

  2. Example 1: Identifying Translations Tell whether each transformation appears to be a translation. Explain. A. B. No; the figure appears to be flipped. Yes; the figure appears to slide.

  3. Check It Out! Example 1 Tell whether each transformation appears to be a translation. a. b. Yes; all of the points have moved the same distance in the same direction. No; not all of the points have moved the same distance.

  4. A B C D ● B’ Draw the figure’s image under the translation that takes B to B’. How far did B move and in what direction? B moved 2 spaces to the right and 5 spaces down. Move all vertices 2 right and 5 down. ● A’ Connect the new vertices and label. C’ ● ● D’

  5. Another way to translate an image is to reflect it over 2 different lines. Draw another reflection line. Begin with a figure Draw a reflection line. Reflect the figure. Reflect the figure again.

  6. Practice Problems!!! 1. Tell whether the transformation appears to be a translation. yes 2. A rook on a chessboard has coordinates (3, 4). The rook is moved up two spaces. Then it is moved three spaces to the left. What is the rook’s final position? (0, 6)
