  1. How is Diversity Influenced by the Media and Communication Technologies? Chapter 3: Pages 72 -75

  2. Let’s Revisit a Few Terms Covered in Chapter 2 • Media concentration • Media convergence / cross ownership • Diversity

  3. Media Concentration • The gathering of ownership of newspapers and other media in the hands of a few large corporations • For example: CanWest owns Global TV Network, a chain of newspapers that include the Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald, as well as a controlling interest in Alliance Atlantis Communications, Canada’s largest entertainment company

  4. Media Convergence ( Cross- Ownership ) • Media convergence/ cross ownership: The use of electronic technology to integrate media such as newspapers, books, TV and the Internet • Enables print and broadcast media to work together to develop stories and create stories for their websites • Diversity: Differences

  5. Hand out: Effects of Technology on Cultural Identity • Look at the continuum under the label “ My First Impression” • Place an “X” on the continuum at the place that best represents your judgment about whether media convergence has a positive or negative effect on cultural diversity • Record point form reasons for your judgment

  6. Media Convergence/ Cross Ownership:1. What is the cartoonist’s opinion of media convergence?2. How does the cartoonist make his opinion clear?3. Note the name of the paper: How does the cartoonist use humor to make his point?

  7. Return to the Continuum……. • Look at the label: My Second Impression” • Mark an “X” on this continuum and record your reasons for doing so • Why do you think you did- or did not –shift?

  8. Next on the Agenda… • Read pages 72 and 73- up to Al Jazeera in North America

  9. Look back at the cartoon on page 73. Now tell me: • How the cartoonist makes his opinion clear? • How the cartoonist uses humor to make his point? 3. What you think the cartoonist’s opinion of media convergence is?

  10. Return to the hand out… • Look at the label: My Third impression • Mark an “X” on this continuum • Record your reasons for doing so.

  11. Al Jazeera in North America • Read this together- but not all at once as if we were saying a prayer or the Pledge of Allegiance… • The Voices box states: At a time when issues in the Middle East, Iran and Iraq are defining our world, why wouldn’t Al Jazeera English be available on our television sets in Canada and the US? Why would Tony Burman, CBC’s chief news editor, ask this? When answering, remember to avoid stereotyping…….

  12. Return to the Hand Out • Complete the part under “Forth Impression”

  13. Pages 74- 75: Diversity and the Internet & Techno- Isolation • Read this together, omittingPoints of View. • Complete “ Fifth Impression” . • You have now finished the Reflect andRespondactivity, page 75.

  14. And the final question is…. Did the concept of techno-isolation affect your thinking about the effects of technology on cultural diversity? If so, how much?

  15. If there is time…. • Walt Disney Company owns various media, including movies, TV shows and advertising. • Choose a movie ,TV show OR piece of advertising produced by Disney- and explain the message you think Disney is communicating.

  16. Remember: The Challenge for this Issue Create a presentation that responds to the question: To what extent should globalization shape identity ? Are there any ideas in today’s lesson that could be useful in your presentation? How could these ideas be useful?
