  1. SCAMP / FRIPON Building a FRIPON network in Britain 18 November 2017

  2. The Fripon Network in France • 100 digital cameras across France • Tracks meteorites to coordinate recovery • Matching chemistry and type with the original orbit (calculated from the camera observations) is useful science • Ten meteorites should land in France every year • Only about 1% are recovered • Recovery rate may be decreasing • FRIPON aims to push the recovery rate up to 20% or better • www.Fripon.org FRIPON is a collaboration of the Observatoire de Paris, the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, the Geosciences department of the Université Paris Sud, and the Geosciences and the Astrophysics departments of the Université d’Aix Marseille

  3. What’s SCAMP? • FRIPON is the Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network. In French, “Fripon” means “playful, mischievous child” • SCAMP is the UK equivalent, the System for Capture of Asteroid and Meteorite Paths. In English, “Scamp” means “a person, especially a child, who is mischievous in a likeable or amusing way” • In 2016/2017, several of us independently contacted FRIPON to see whether we could extend the network into the UK • Around October 2017, the FRIPON team stopped communicating, for reasons not yet understood • SCAMP is the result – focussing on what we can do, rather than what we can’t do • If we get a good capture, will seek FRIPON input to triangulate and do dark flight analysis. • Precedent is the “PRISMA” network in Italy.

  4. SCAMP Cameras - locations

  5. The Camera • Fully digital • Can operate night and day • One cable, Power over Internet, can be 100 metres long • Compatible with UFOCapture HD • FRIPON / SCAMP uses FreeTure, developed for the FRIPON project • FreeTure is free, open-source software The East Barnet camera, on my chimney in North London!

  6. Manchester The Manchester camera, high over the city centre.

  7. What’s inside the enclosure? A. Housing produced by Shelyak Instruments of Grenoble, incorporating a 50mm polycarbonate dome on a one-piece aluminium housing with cooling fins and no other heating/cooling mechanisms. Packed with silica gel sacs, maintenance access through the removeable base. B. Lens: Focusafe FS12520FEMP (F1.25mm focal length, F/2 aperture, CS mount, field coverage is 185°. C. Camera: Basler Ace 1300-gm30, CS mount, (a fully-digital GigE industrial camera). D. Ethernet cable (Cat 5e, 6 or 7) already connected to the camera within the housing, and exiting from the housing through the base. E. Mounting structure, provided by Shelyak with the camera.

  8. The Full Setup 1. FRIPON camera – See Appendix 3 for what’s inside. 2. Mounting bracket – See Appendix 2 for assembly. 3. Television antenna mounting pole. 4. Outdoor junction box – sold with camera. 5. Ethernet cable – Cat 5e, 6 or 7, up to 100m long. 10. Mains timer switch 6. Power over internet injector - IEEE 802.3af compliant. 9. PC with internet connection 7. Ethernet cable – Cat 5e, 6 or 7. 8. Intel 1000 mps Ethernet card.

  9. How to get one • The cameras costs about EUR 1300 to buy fully-built • Buy one from Shelyak instruments, http://www.shelyak.com , 73, rue de Chartreuse, 38420 Le Versoud – France • The best contact is Alain BARTHEZ, Sales, Shelyak Instruments, phone : +33 476 41 36 81, mobile : + 33661 36 60 47, alain@shelyak.com • Or – build it yourself by buying the parts. Should work… and cost about £550. Untested! • Then, download the setup guide from the UKMON website - https://ukmeteornetwork.co.uk/downloads/SCAMP-setup-guide-Ver%201.2.pdf • You’ve done it – that’s all there is to it.
