  1. Beginning Journalism September 26, 2011 Agenda: Passive Voice vs. Active Voice Lead Writing Practice LEAD quiz tomorrow

  2. Passive Voice/Active Voice • What just happened? • So…in AV: The subject is doing the action. • Oranges are grown in California vs. California grows oranges. • Is PV wrong? Not necessarily…but it usually isn’t the best way to represent your thoughts. So, avoid it if possible.

  3. Practice • Try rewriting these passive sentences into active sentences. • Ready…go…

  4. Passive Voice Sentences • The assignment was given by the teacher. • The World Series was lost by the Rangers. • The game was stopped by the referee. • The thief was captured by the police. • The lecture was given by the visiting professor.

  5. Is there any time when it’s okay? • Sure! • But they aren’t any rules…just make sure your sentences are clear and concise. • Avoid. Eliminate if you can think of an easy fix.

  6. Lead writing practice! • You have a quiz tomorrow over leads! (Collective cheer!) • So…here is our last effort to practice those hard-earned skills.

  7. Carousel Leads • Each table will start with a WWWWWH. • Write the WWWWWH in the middle of your large wall paper. • Write a lead somewhere on the paper. (Leaving room for others.) • Pass the paper to the next table when I ring the buzzer… • Repeat.

  8. Exit Note • What are you confident you know (100%) for your quiz tomorrow? • What are you feeling worried about?
