  1. Spiceworks Scanning By RoyL

  2. Who Scans • How long have you used Spiceworks Scanning? • Version (5,6,or 7) • What do you hope to accomplish tonight?

  3. Why I Scan • Visibility/pulse on network • “See” what’s connected • AD Auditing (including DNS) • Wanted/unwanted software • License compliance • Disk space/Event log errors • Reports (Fixed Assets, Upgrade Projects) • Warranty Status • Security Compliance • Downtime Prevention (Alerts, reports)

  4. Scan Types • Main: • WMI (Winders devices) • SNMP (V1, V2, V3) (Switches, Routers, Printers) • ESX (VMware hosts and vms) • ILO (HP Servers) • SSH (Apple, Linux) • Secondary • HTTP (Some devices; Telephony, NAS, SAN) • Enable (Network Devices) • vPro (Intel based boards) • Telnet (some networking devices)

  5. WMI • Tips on WMI • Set up Service Account (in AD and Spiceworks) • Setup WMI under MMC • Setup DCOM (under dcomcnfg) • Setup Firewall (Turn on ICMP IPV4)

  6. SNMP • Uses “Public” by default • Try to use V2 or V3 if possible • Scans network devices, printers, some routers • Smart switches=more visibility

  7. Advanced Settings • NMAP (I enable but I have a reason) • Don’t Enable if you use Avast, SEP, and other IDS software • http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Nmap • WoL (AKA Mergic-perket) (I disable) • Scan Speed (Slow) (helps with legacy devices and unknowns)
