  4. Focus of the collection • The Cushman Collection is comprised of 14,400 Kodachrome Slides • Photos taken between 1917 – 1969 • Cushman’s photos captured American life

  5. Management of the library • The Cushman Collection is owned by Indiana University • It is managed jointly by the Indiana University Library Archives and the Digital Library Program • Contributions to the project have been made by both the School of Fine Arts and the Digital Library Program

  6. Purpose and goals of the collection • To digitize and preserve photos from a period from when most photos were in black and white • To act as a model for other libraries and museums • To act as a “test” to explore new methods of preservation

  8. Path to digitization- funding • After applying for and receiving a grant, the slides were digitized by a third-party vendor • The university’s digital library program receives replacement funds each year • Funds are used for servers, storage
